Lawn Fertilization Summer Lawn Care Homeowners spend an average of 40 hours each year mowing according to Audubon.org. Of course that is only the mowing part, there is also the $8.5 billion spent on lawn care products like fertilizer, weed control and lawn equipment. According to experts in the field of gardening, below are some tips for lawn care during the summer months: Fertilizing  -  Typically fertilization is only required a couple of times per year. Experts agree that fertilization in the spring and then again in midsummer yields effective results in terms of lawn appearance and overall health. Specially blended fertilizers for lawns which contain high amounts of nitrogen stimulate growth and a deep green color. Feeding the lawn twice per year often results in excessive growth which can lead to additional watering and mowing needs. The type of fertilizer used also makes a difference according to experts. Many brands offer pre-emergent herbicides mixed in with the actual nitrogen. Pre-emergents are a tremendous aid in preventing weed growth. However, it is thought by many turf growers that it is best to use pre-emergents by themselves rather than the ones mixed in with lawn food. Fertilizer Spreading - When you feed the lawn it is always best to do it when the grass is dry. This is because if the grass is wet the grains of fertilizer can stick to blades of grass instead of going down to the soil as needed. If the fertilizer sticks to the wet blades it typically will result in chemical burning that will damage the lawn. Using a fertilizer spreader is the most effective tool. It is also important to load the spreader while it is setting on he sidewalk or driveway. Invariably there will be spillage as you load the spreader. This can be swept up and placed in the spreader if on the concrete but if the spillage is on the lawn itself it will result in [...]

Why It’s Important to Stay Off the Lawn During the Winter Months

Our monthly seasonal landscape care for lawns is done by a team of highly trained and service-focused professionals who love what they do. Lawn care can include additional services for your landscape, pest control, and ice and snow removal needs. With fall racing toward the winter season and the weather making it known what's on the way -- frigid temperatures, ice, and snow - it's time to think more about how to take care of your lawn during the winter. Even now during the second half of fall, frost starts to appear in the mornings, especially when w'eve had a cold, clear night. You may start to see how moisture on grass and plants starts to freeze. A light frost over the course of several nights can lead to damage for your lawn. For example, Bermuda grass can start to have a brown, patchy appearance and die pretty quickly if warmer temperatures do not return. St. Augustine grass has a brown, yellow or even purple hue where frost has damaged grass blades. While you can fix this when spring arrives, there are other things you can do in the meantime to prevent further damage. During a frost, each of those grass blades is essentially frozen. Therefore, when you walk on it, the blades will break from the weight of your foot steps. This does more damage than the frost alone because the weight causes more cellular damage to the grass blades. When a lawn is frosted, the grass blades are literally frozen. Any activity on the lawn while it is frosty, like walking on it or mowing it, will "break" the grass blade and damage the lawn. It will recover eventually, but it may not fully bounce back until the following spring. This may make it even harder for your lawn to recover, so it's best to stay off of it. Another tip is to do deep watering of your lawn at night because it allows the moisture to evaporate slowly overnight. This evaporation then creates friction and heat around each of the grass blades. When the night air temperature drops below freezing, your grass still has a slightly higher temperature from the evaporative heat processes. As a result, the lawn turf doesn't hit the freezing temperature that causes the water molecule expansion that leads to the frost damage. Another tip from golf course management is to use a sprinkler to melt the frost before walking on the lawn. Pugh's Earthworks The Best Commercial Lawn Services in Memphis As summer arrives, it's time to start thinking about your plan for ensuring that lawn stays looking as lush as it has all spring. There are many things you can do to help your lawn is green and beautiful despite the summer heat and humidity. Here are five of our best summer lawn care tips: Feed your lawn with fertilizer during the early part of the summer. This gives your lawn a fighting chance to make it through heat, intense sun, and potential drought. The nutrients in the fertilizer help feed the grass blades, strengthening them to withstand what summer hits it with. Be wise with summer lawn watering. This means about one inch of water per week when it's very hot as well as deeper, yet less frequent, watering. Also, water early in the day to cut down on evaporation. Mow regularly but don't cut the grass too short. When your grass is taller, it can grow deeper roots and help shade the surrounding area while also becoming more grass tolerant. Therefore, mow it at two to three inches. Also, sharpen mower blades to cut more precisely. Consider changing your lawn to accommodate high-traffic areas. Do you have that part of the lawn where everyone seems to walk across because it's a short cut to your business? Consider installing stepping stones or another type of walkway here rather than having a lawn that shows signs of wear and tear. Know summer lawn bugs and issues so you can treat them immediately. This includes summer insect infestations from insects like chinch bugs, fire ants, fleas, and mosquitoes. Or, your lawn might experience fungal problems like powdery mildew and brown patch. There are also grubs that appear in the summer, so know how to treat these or get a lawn care professional to help you. Contact us now to learn more about how we can help with your summer commercial lawn.

The Difference Between Sod and Seed

Pugh's Earthworks is one of the largest landscape design, installation and maintenance firms in the Mid South area. Our clients include some of the premier office buildings, hotels, hospitals, churches and cemeteries in the cities we operate. In addition to the commercial customers we serve, we also provide landscape services for Home Owners Associations (HOAs), Condo Owners Associations (COA’s) and individual residential homeowners. Pugh's Earthworks Offering Commercial Lawn Maintenance What commercial property wouldn't want to show off a lush lawn to welcome their customers to their place of business? All it takes is the right lawn preparation and lawn maintenance process. But, what are the differences between sod and seed for a beautiful lawn? There are numerous benefits that sod provides for your commercial lawn. Here's why. Although the cost to lay sod can be expensive and requires a lot of manual labor, which is why so many people immediately opt for seed or reseed for their lawn care, there are more advantages if you use sod. To sod, you must remove old grass, weed the soil, and level of the planting area. Then, you'll need to roll out heavy rolls of sod and water extensively.  However, seeding your lawn can be just as expensive and take a long time to see if it worked. The seeds could float away in the water or be eaten by birds.  In the meantime, your landscape looks barren and unattractive. Plus, the grass may come in unevenly. It's like growing a beard with stubble and unequal hair growth. In contrast and despite the work and cost, sod gives you an instant lawn. It only takes it a few weeks to start growing and establish itself. Plus, it looks even and offers a beautiful appearance. Nor will it attract birds and will not wash away. The decision to seed or sod should be made carefully. It's something that a professional commercial landscape company can help you decide on, offering the pros and cons as well as cost comparisons. Just remember that sod is quick, easy to install, requires much less water, and almost instantly usable. Contact us to learn more about sod versus seed and how we can give you a beautiful commercial lawn!

Spring is the Time to Seed Lawns

As the season of growth and renewal, it makes sense that this is the ideal time to seed your commercial lawn as part of your lawn maintenance work. The temperatures are cooler and there are frequent rain showers that encourage new blades of grass to grow before summer, heat, and drier conditions arrive. Here's what you need to do to seed a commercial lawn. First, use a rake to loosen up the first two inches of soil and remove rocks or dirt that might get in the way of grass seed growing. Then, add about an inch of topsoil to the ground as well as a starter fertilizer. Next, sprinkle the grass seed on top of the topsoil. Rake lightly after planting to help evenly distribute the grass seeds. Adding a layer of peat moss that is about a half inch thick protects the lawn seeds from birds, animals, and wind. After adding the peat moss, water the seed immediately by regularly adding water for the next one and a half to two weeks. If it's a rainy area, you don't need to add as much water but can rely on the rain to do your watering. The next step is to add fertilizer to the commercial lawn approximately six weeks after the grass seed sprouts. The type of fertilizer depends on grass variety, region, and climate. Till the first two to three inches of the soil with a tiller or a garden rake to level out high and low spots as well as to remove clumps of dirt, rocks, and branches. Mow the lawn for the first time when the new grass reaches three inches tall. Make sure that the blade on the lawnmower is sharp. Do not add any weed killer to the bare soil or until after you mow the new grass at least three or four times. Also, try to keep traffic off the new grass until it can establish itself. We'd like to help you enjoy a long-lasting and lush lawn at your business. Contact us now to learn more about our commercial lawn and landscape maintenance services.

Tips For Winter Lawn Care

We are now in the midst of winter, which means there could be snow, ice, freezing conditions, rain, wind and lots of debris that can make a mess of lawns. While it may seem easier to just let the lawn be until the end of winter, there are still things you can do to maintain your lawn in the winter time. When weather conditions allow, you can still fertilize, aerate, seed, and clear your lawn of debris. Here are some winter lawn care tips to enact today: Aerate and Fertilize This needs to be done before the first frost date. Most likely, that has already happened so you may need to skip this step in winter lawn care for the moment. If you haven't experienced a frost, then this is a good chance to give your lawn some time to breathe and relieve soil compaction. Once you've aerated, use some fertilizer that only works toward providing nutrients for root growth during those cold months. Tidy the Debris All the leaves and other debris can cut off any air that your lawn needs to breathe during those dormant winter months. That's why you'll need to remove the leaves. Also, any debris like that could become wet and harbor disease that could do damage to your lawn. Rake up as much debris as possible. You can use it for mulch or put it in your green recycling. Keep Off the Lawn When your lawn is frosted or dormant, it's best to try to avoid walking on it too much. Even strong grass can become weak if it's regularly walked on. You can avoid walking on your lawn by doing your best to keep driveways, sidewalks, and other walkways free of snow and ice by using rock salt. Prepare While You Can Do as much as you can when weather permits. Otherwise, leave the rest to Mother Nature. Commercial Lawn Care Help We can handle all of your winter commercial lawn maintenance needs. Also, don't forget that we also offer snow and ice treatment.

Fall Commercial Lawn Care Services

Now that fall has arrived and the weather is changing, it's time to take a more in-depth look at fall commercial lawn care services and what that involves. The fall commercial lawn care service includes seeding, dethatching, aerating, over-seeding, and fertilizing. Mowing This is the time to start decreasing the height of your lawnmower. You'll want to end up somewhere around an inch and a half high on your lawn height. The frequency of mowing is also determined by how fast the grass grows during this time. Take one-third of the blade or less. Also, it's better to mow in the evening so the sun is not beating down on it. Weeding By this point, the weeds should be disappearing. There may be a few stragglers left to take care of before winter sets in and they completely go away. Trees and Shrubs This is the time to also pay attention to trees and shrubs as well as the lawn, doing deep root fertilization. This provides your landscape with the essential nutrients it needs for the winter. Raking It's important to remove all leaves that have built up on your lawn. If you leave them, they will decompose and use up any soil moisture plus invite insects to your lawn. This will all cause damage, including dead spots on the lawn that will be a welcome home for weeds in the springtime. Aerating Because lawns become compacted over time, this can reduce air pockets that are necessary pathways for nutrients and water to reach grass roots. That's why aeration becomes an annual event that is usually done in the fall. It loosens up the soil, returning those air pockets to the lawn. Over Seeding Adding more seeds to your lawn can help fix dead spots and creating grass that is lush and beautiful for the upcoming spring season. Fall Fertilizing A special fall fertilizer keeps the lawn healthy during the autumn months so that it has the nutrients it needs to get through the winter. Let us help you take care of your commercial lawn throughout the fall season. Contact us now to get started on our monthly commercial lawn maintenance services.
