Pugh’s Earthworks Commercial Landscaping Water Conservation

Pugh's Earthworks has Big Company Strength and Small Company Values! Recently, I took a drive from Oklahoma to Georgia for a combination Business and Pleasure two week trip. As I drove, the hills, trees, lakes and rivers seemed to get more plentiful and beautiful. Culimanting by the time I got to Chattanoga TN, I was in a different world. Going through Littlerock AR, Memphis and Jackson TN, I paused for proud reflection on Pugh's Earthworks and the part they play in Commercial Landscaping Water Conservation. Then I thought about our fellow Americans out West where water supply reservoirs are at a cricitically low level and rationing is in place. Pugh's Earthworks is one of the Mid South’ s leading commercial landscape installation and maintenance companies. From its beginning, the company has continued its commitment to quality, integrity and superior service. The company provides the highest quality landscaping services and commercial grounds management for various commercial properties. Mark Pugh started the lawn business in 1992 in a $500 truck with his phone number on it. Just 21 years later Pugh’s Earthworks has developed markets including Jackson, Memphis and Nashville TN. Plus Littlerock AR and Southaven MS. Not only does Pugh's Earthworks focus on creating and maintaining amazing Commercial Property Landscapes for all customers, they also have a love for the environment. With this in mind, all chemical treatments for pesticides and fertizilzers are applied in compliance with industry safety standards. In addition, as landscapes are designed, things like soil errosion and water conservation are always top of mind. Pugh's is a member of the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP). Below is an article written by a member of that organization regarding water conservation efforts in CA. Earlier this year, the State Water Resources Control Board voted unanimously to implement a statewide ban on the watering of nonfunctional turf in the commercial, industrial and institutional sectors in California that runs for one year. The board also put regulations in place requiring local agencies to implement water use restrictions as water supplies may be up to 20 percent lower due to extreme drought. In a webinar hosted on June 6 by the California Landscape Contractors Association, the Irrigation Association, NALP and Maureen Erbeznik & Associates, Warren Gorowitz with Hunter Industries, Peter Estournes with Gardenworks Inc. and Maureen Erbeznik discussed the nature of the restrictions and the options available to landscape professionals. Erbeznik explains that nonfunctional turf refers to areas that are solely ornamental. If the turf is used for recreational purposes or community events, then it is considered functional. Exemptions to the ban include spaces that use non-potable water for irrigation or areas with trees. The ban does not apply to residential yards. Stay on Top of Local Regulations Local retail water agencies can expand regulations at their discretion to places like multi-family housing, golf courses, cemeteries and subsurface irrigation. With more than 400 water agencies in the state, the fluidity of restrictions and regulations will vary on each area’s water situation. [...]

Consult with Pugh’s Earthworks regarding Commercial Sprinkler Installation

Pugh's Earthworks has been serving Commercial Clients since 1992 A key component to a healthy and beautiful Commercial Landscape is the process of Commercial Sprinkler Installation. When you consider the Commercial Landscaping Companies that offer this installation, be sure to speak with a professional at Pugh's Earthworks. Spring is a great time of year to start the process of installation. The ground is warmer allowing for easier trenching. In addition, it is early enough in the year to allow for grass to spread and cover the installation bare spots. You probably will not need to run the system until the weather gets hot and dry but at least you will be ready. Sprinkler systems are so vital for so many reasons. All types of businesses use Commercial Sprinkler Systems. Retail Shopping Centers, Restaurants, Hotels, Office Parks and Hospitals use them. Pugh's Earthworks specializes in Commercial Landscaping for these types of businesses. Below are some benefits of Commercial Sprinkler Installation. Economically Beneficial - A sophisticated and properly installed system can properly apply water. The use of a timer makes the water come on at the optimum time of day to reduce the evaporation. In addition, the sprinkler mapping is done in such a way that areas on grass, flower beds and trees receive the ample amount of water to keep them healthy and beautiful. Convenient Maintenance - Generally speaking a properly installed system should not require a great deal of maintenance. However, the professionals at Pugh's Earthworks will do a routine annual maintenance check to be sure the system is operating at full capacity. They also winterize all systems to ensure there is no breakage due to freezing. Please contact Pugh's Earthworks for a free consultation regarding Commercial Sprinkler Installation. Our certified and highly experienced technicians can evaluate your property and design a sample with a cost estimate to discuss with you.     Pugh's Earthwork's Commercial Sprinkler Installation Pugh’s Earthworks is one of the Mid-South’ s leading commercial landscape installation and maintenance companies. Pugh’s Earthworks knows that proper Summer watering is critical for the health of Commercial Landscapes

Pugh's Earthworks In some parts of the US, this summer has brought more rain than normal and in other parts more drought than anticipated. Water is such a critical element for life and true for plants as well. However, water not applied in proper quantity or at the wrong time a day can often create more problems. Hiring the professional and certified commercial landscape technicians at Pugh's Earthworks will ensure that your commercial property receives the exact formula of water application to maximize grow and overall health. As the temperatures continue to soar, it's important to have a regular summer watering schedule for your lawn to ensure it can thrive and grow throughout the year. Here are some tips on how to water your lawn during the summer season: You don't need to water your lawn every day in the summer despite thinking it will help in the hot weather. What happens is that the lawn gets over-watered and starts to die. Get to know the soil properties of the area you live in. This tells you a lot about how to water your lawn in the summer and throughout the year. This is because water tends to penetrate soils differently. For example, it is more likely to penetrate sandy or loose soil than clay-based soil.  The water should penetrate six to eight inches below the ground surface. Check your overall irrigation system for your lawn to identify any places where water is not regularly reaching that portion of your lawn. Any dry spots will tell you where you need to make changes to your irrigation. Think about what type of grass you have in your lawn as this will also tell you more about how to water it. For example, Tall Fescue has a deep root system. This means it has the highest drought tolerance of all cool-season turf types. Then, Kentucky Bluegrass goes dormant during a drought. Warm-season grasses, which include Zoysia, St. Augustine, Bermuda, and Centipede, tend to thrive in warm conditions. They have a deep root system and require approximately 20% less water than cool-season lawn grasses. The age of your lawn is also an important consideration for determining irrigation frequency. While all lawns need consistent moisture, you need to proceed with caution on newly-planted lawns. Do not rely on rainfall. Instead, you'll need to provide supplemental irrigation during the first year of growth to ensure it develops that deep root system. Focus your watering times on early morning or late afternoon/evening when the sun is not scorching the grass or adding to the water evaporation. As a commercial landscape and maintenance company that is focused on helping local businesses enjoy healthy, beautiful outdoor spaces, we are here to help with your lawn care needs. Contact us, Pugh's Earthworks today and we'll keep your lawn looking lush and green throughout all seasons. Pugh's Earthworks Big Company Strength and Small Company Values! A very good article addressing this was written by Dr. Melinda Knuth, “Future water availability could change the American landscape. ”Melinda Knuth, PhD Texas A&M    Drought perception The public tends to have a skewed perception of drought and Knuth’s research shows that people often perceive a drought when there actually isn’t one occurring. Consequently, the team found that attitudes toward water conservation between those who correctly perceive they are in a drought differs from those who correctly perceive they’re not in [...]

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers about Irrigation Installation Q: How will I benefit from an in-ground sprinkler system? A: Since hand watering is done on a random basis, and at irregular intervals, an automatic sprinkler system will actually, in most cases, use less water. It will also disperse the water at an even rate, and for a predetermined amount of time. This allows you to water sunny and shady areas for different periods of time, and to water when it is most efficient. One obvious benefit is the ability to continue a watering program while you are away on vacation, etc. Q: How long does a system take to put in? A: It would depend on the area that is trying to be covered. An average size lawn (@15,000 sq. ft.) can usually be done in one full day, depending on the situation. A large country lawn can take anywhere from two to four days. On average, we spend one to two days on a job. Q: What is a back flow device, and why do I need one on my sprinkler system? A: A back flow device is generally a brass assembly that will prevent any water from the sprinkler system from getting into the drinking water supply, and are required by all municipalities. There are many different types of these, and each individual municipality has differing requirements for the installation. Q: What type of maintenance does the system require? A: All systems need to be winterized at the end of the season. This is done by attaching an air hose to a fitting on the water line, and blowing all of the water out of the system. Most people that we install systems for simply turn it back on in the springtime themselves. We do offer the service of opening systems for the season. The quality of the products used initially, and of the overall installation, play an important part in the long [...]

Protect Your Irrigation System From Freezing This Winter

With winter just around the corner and temperatures already starting to drop, it's important to consider how this change in the weather can impact your irrigation system. What can easily happen is that your irrigation system freezes. This can cause pipes to burst and create a lot of problems. To prevent this from happening, there are some steps you can take to prepare your irrigation system and commercial landscape for the freezing weather: 1. Insulate The first step is to shut off the water supply to the irrigation system. The main shut-off valve for your irrigation system needs to be protected against freezing by wrapping it in insulation. The best way to insulate this shut-off valve is with foam insulation tape and a plastic bag. If you don't have one of these valves, this is the time to consider having one.  Also, insulate any above-ground irrigation pipes you may have has part of your system. You can use self-sticking foam-insulating tape or foam insulating tubes for these above-ground pipes. 2. Go with Manual If you have an automatic irrigation system, this when you need to turn off the timer and handle it manually. Most controllers have what's called a "rain-mode" that shuts off the signals to the valves. Everything else will work. The only change is the valves will not activate. 3. Drain the Pipes The next step is to drain the pipes that are part of the irrigation system. Any water that remains in the pipes during winter can freeze and expand until it breaks the pipes.  There are several ways to drain pipes. You can use a manual drain valve, an automatic drain valve, or the compressed air blow-out method. When it comes to draining your pipes, the best option is to turn to a local irrigation specialist due to the risks involved. We do offer sprinkler winterization services during this time of the year. 4. Protect Valves and Backflow Preventers Finally, you will need to return to some insulation work, including insulating the backflow preventers and valves if they are located above ground. Insulation tape also works well for this task. Just be careful to not block the air vents and drain outlets on the backflow preventers. If it all sounds like a lot of work, then consider letting us handle all of this winterization process for you. Contact us now to learn more about all of our winterization services, including snow and ice treatment.
