The summer heat brings a lot of stress to a lawn. The lawn can become parched and damaged from the summer sun and the extreme heat. Although it's easy to understand when a lawn loses its luster in winter months, most of us don't want the sun to shine down on a brown lawn in the summer months. That's when it's time to think about fertilizing as part of our summer lawn maintenance. Don’t Over Fertilize You need to be careful about fertilizing in the summer. Applying too much during the heat of summer can actually harm your lawn. You will end up burning your existing lawn. Plus, If your lawn is looking straggly in midsummer, resist the urge to fertilize. And, it can lead to a significant amount of tender growth that will struggle in the heat and actually not make it. Why Fertilize in the Summer? When you fertilize conservatively in the summer, you'll be able to achieve some benefits for your lawn. For example, the right amount of fertilizer protects and strengthens a lawn against insects, heat stress, drought, and foot traffic. Use Organic Fertilizer When using fertilizer during hot summer months, opt for organic fertilizers. They are naturally slow-release. This means that they are less likely to burn your lawn compared to chemical fertilizers. Weed and Feed Fertilizer Since weeds are harder to kill in the summer because of their strong root system you can still cautiously apply a weed and feed fertilizer throughout the summer months of June, July, and August. Look for those that contain nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium because this helps to promote a healthy lawn. Recycling Grass and Fertilizing Another option is to recycle your grass clippings as you mow your lawn. you can leave the grass clippings on the lawn to decompose. These clippings will recycle nutrients that will then serve as fertilizer during the summer months. This can actually reduce your use of chemicals on your lawn, which then reduces the risk of overfertilizing while providing a green lawn even during those heat waves. Technology was the theme of the 2017 Spring Conference and season kick off. Our annual spring conference was an exciting time and much was learned. Zack Berggren is the safety engineer for Pugh's Earthworks. Safety of employees is of utmost importance and Zack has achieved a near perfect safety record. Above is Zack showing off some of the safety equipment that field technicians wear. Some of the guidelines followed are listed below. General safety precautions for landscape workers in the field. Train workers to ensure that they understand all of the job hazards and can handle tools and equipment safely. Report unsafe working conditions or equipment to your supervisor. Identify and destroy harmful or noxious plants such as poison ivy. Protect against insects with insect repellents or protective clothing when needed. Use caution in areas where you may encounter wild animals or unfriendly domestic ones. Rest periodically during strenuous jobs such as digging or sawing: work-rest schedules vary according to temperature conditions, how strenuous the work is, and how acclimatized ("used to") the worker is to the workload. Make sure emergency telephone numbers are clearly posted or readily available. Know the location of the first aid kit and how to use the contents. Do not touch stray or dead animals. Contact an animal control agency for removal. Wear respiratory protection if you must clean up waste, leaves or dust that may contain mouse droppings. Mice can carry the hantavirus which can become airborne with dust and may be inhaled by workers. Be aware of expected weather conditions for the day, and plan accordingly. Have plans about where to go if severe weather hits. Know where to seek shelter in a thunderstorm (fully enclosed metal vehicles, with windows up or a building (not sheds). Learn proper hand washing techniques. Wash your hands thoroughly after before eating, using the washroom, or changing tasks (using different tools and/or different locations). Personal Protective Equipment Tips: Wear high-cut CSA certified safety footwear with toe caps and reinforced, non-skid soles. Use approved (e.g. CSA Z94.1) head protection when working under branches or where there may be falling objects. Use appropriate eye protection (safety glasses or goggles) whenever dust or debris may get into your eyes (eg. when power tilling, breaking up rocks or concrete) or when using strong cleaning agents, spraying or dusting. Wear sturdy, well-fitting gloves with grip. Use vibration-absorbing gloves while operating vibrating equipment. Wear suitable chemical-resistant rubber or plastic gloves when handling fertilizers and pesticides and other chemicals. Wear hearing protection devices (e.g., ear muffs, ear plugs) that provide appropriate protection from noise produced by equipment being used. Protect yourself from the sun - use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher and re-apply sunscreen as required throughout the day. Consider wearing lightweight long pants (v.s. shorts) and long-sleeved shirts. Wear a brimmed hat and comfortable clothing that provides sun protection. Wear sunglasses that filter out at least 90% of the sun's ultraviolet rays. Take regular rest breaks inside. Frequent short pauses are better than longer breaks further apart. Do not wear loose-fitting or torn clothing.
Oncoming spring in the landscape business means it's time to train and get prepared for the busy season. Pugh's Earthworks just held it's annual spring training and conference. Owners, managers and foremen attended the three day event and gained some great knowledge on current processes, industry trends and available products. The guys from SiteOne provided dinner one night and lots of info on the hottest products in landscaping. It’s that time of the year again where we all sit around and wonder where 2014 went. Soon our friends and family will visit and enjoy the holiday season with loved ones, but that’s a completely different story. I wanted to share with you my top five tips to tie a ribbon on this year and prepare for an even more successful 2015. Reflect on this year What went well? What did you do to prepare yourself for that success? Can it be replicated as you think about next year? What didn’t work? Why didn’t it work? What would you do differently if you had a chance? Clean out your email inbox How many emails are in your inbox, just sitting there, staring you in the face for days on end? Take the time to weed through those emails and don’t be afraid to discard them if they are no longer important. If they were vital to your success, most likely they would have been done by now or brought up again by the colleague that sent them to you. Set a personal goal for 2015 Is it to lose weight? Save money for a house? Get a puppy? Visit your best friend? Take a trip to the place you have always wanted to go? Go to Space Camp? Hire a new commercial landscaper? Doesn’t matter what it is, but if you want to achieve it you need to commit to it and set a path of progress to get there. Set a work goal for 2015 Open in a new market? Take on a large rebranding campaign? Or perhaps your goals are more career oriented, perhaps to get that next promotion? If so, you want to pay attention to these great tips and avoid these common mistakes. Reestablish Connections Reach out to someone in your business network that you haven’t spoken to in a long time, someone who has done something special for you over this past year or an old friend from your former job. Drop a line to a friend that overcame a personal challenge this year, somebody who left you a message a while ago that you just never got around to returning or just for no reason at all! It may seem like a lot to squeeze in at this busy time of the year, but I can guarantee you that it can be done with just a little conscious direction. Think of it as the gift that you can give yourself. Take the necessary couple of hours over the next couple of weeks to practice some of these tips. Safety of individuals and pets is key in all treatment procedures. “Convenience is of utmost importance to property managers and business owners, and we have expanded our services to include indoor and outdoor pest control solutions in order to accommodate the needs of our commercial clientele” says owner Mark Pugh. “We feel that offering a more comprehensive variety of services is in the best interest of our existing and potential customers.” Mark Pugh has over 20 years of experience in the landscaping business and Pugh’s Earthworks has offices in Memphis, Little Rock, Nashville, and Jackson MS. The Pugh’s business model has been to provide excellence in customer service and listen to what their clients are asking for. This willingness to adapt and expand has resulted in a successful courier service that was born out of flower delivery vans. Now, with the pest control expansion, Pugh’s has taken advantage of another opportunity to serve it’s customers more completely. Michael Pugh, co-owner and CFO of Pugh's Earthworks based in Memphis, TN, says he first began thinking about transitioning to a paperless office back in 2005. Since then the business has grown dramatically. Three additional branches have been opened. The volume of paper being generated daily—not to mention the inefficiencies tied to the handling of all that paper—soon spiraled out of control. Pugh reached his breaking point in 2010. "We were simply out of room at our main facility in Memphis," Pugh recalls. "We already had one entire office stuffed full of filing cabinets. Additionally, we had well over 100 three-ring binders with work orders from the past couple of years. We're talking about the type of paperwork you don't need to put your hands on every day, but still important enough that you don't want to shred it. I didn't know what to do. I was looking at having to pay someone off site to store our paper. That was tough to swallow." Pugh happened upon a company called Cabinet NG at a QuickBooks user's conference. He learned about a product called CNG-SAFE, a complete document management and workflow software product. His curiosity over the concept of paperless was revitalized.
