Avoid Planting Trees and Shrubs in the Heat of Summer

Pugh's Earthworks is one of the largest landscape design, installation and maintenance firms in the Mid South area. Our clients include some of the premier office buildings, hotels, hospitals, churches and cemeteries in the cities we operate. In addition to the commercial customers we serve, we also provide landscape services for Home Owners Associations (HOAs), Condo Owners Associations (COA’s) and individual residential homeowners. Pugh's Earthworks The Best Landscape Services in Memphis There is no denying that summer has arrived. That heat and humidity say it all. For those of us that work out in that heat, we know how we feel: wilted and dehydrated (if we are not careful). Just that feeling alone tells you why you should avoid planting trees and shrubs in the heat of the summer. Imagine how they must feel and then on top of that trying to get acclimated to new soil and put roots down. It's not a formula for successful planting. Instead, you may want to forego any planting until the heat of the summer diminishes and wait until the fall to provide a better opportunity for the trees and shrubs to get settled in before the winter weather arrives. This is an ideal time to rethink your commercial landscape and explore more drought-resistant plants. You may also want to consider a drip system or other water-friendly measures. Our commercial landscape designers can also work with you on redesigning your landscape to offer something different. Or, we can suggest other ways to protect your landscape from the heat and light intensity of the sun. This includes inspecting your irrigation system, mulching, and re-setting your watering scheduling. Contact us today to find out how we can help you keep your lawn and landscape cool and lush all summer long!

Water Wisely During the Summer Months

Pugh's Earthworks is one of the largest landscape design, installation and maintenance firms in the Mid South area. Our clients include some of the premier office buildings, hotels, hospitals, churches and cemeteries in the cities we operate. In addition to the commercial customers we serve, we also provide landscape services for Home Owners Associations (HOAs), Condo Owners Associations (COA’s) and individual residential homeowners. Pugh's Earthworks The Best Landscape Services in Memphis For Summer During the summer months, the hot weather and intense sunlight are tough for summer plants and lawns to take. That's why we often refresh both with extra water. However, there is still a need to water wisely during these hot months to be careful with water and get the maximum impact from your watering without wasting any of this precious resource. Here are some tips on how to water wisely to use less water as well as give your plants and lawn just the right amount:  Water weekly: Pick one day a week to water your lawn and plants, preferably a time in the morning or evening where the sun and heat won't evaporate it too quickly. You may need to adjust it should there be summer thunderstorms or if you notice a better time where the water sticks around. Water deeply: Before you overwater, it's important to understand what this means and how much deeply involves. Check the soil and see if water has permeated the top six inches of clay soil or eight to 12 inches if you have loamy soil. Make sure the water is not stagnating on the top as this could mean your soil is compacted and it may lead to plant rot. Think long, soaking rain rather than many several quick sprinkles. Water when plants are ready: Plants will tell you when they are thirsty. Leaves will wilt or droop. The leaves may also yellow, curl up, or drop off. That means they really could use some water. Water in the morning: By focusing your plant and lawn watering on this point in the day, it gives the plants and lawn a way to fill up on water they can use throughout the day. Water plants when they need it: Besides when they are thirsty, there are other times where a plant or lawn may most need water. This includes giving more water to baby seedlings and transplants to help them because their root systems are not yet developed and acclimated to the soil.  Another group of plants that need water more is those found in vegetable gardens. This includes pods that are forming on beans, fruit that is forming on summer squash or zucchini, and tomatoes that are flowering. Help conserve water in the soil: Take steps to keep the water in place for the week by adding a layer of mulch. This also maintains a steady ground temperature and keeps it from heating up. Compost also improves the soil to hold water so add organic matter like leaves, grass, garden trimmings, and vegetable peelings. Contact [...]

5 Summer Lawn Tips

Pugh's Earthworks is one of the largest landscape design, installation and maintenance firms in the Mid South area. Our clients include some of the premier office buildings, hotels, hospitals, churches and cemeteries in the cities we operate. In addition to the commercial customers we serve, we also provide landscape services for Home Owners Associations (HOAs), Condo Owners Associations (COA’s) and individual residential homeowners. Pugh's Earthworks The Best Commercial Lawn Services in Memphis As summer arrives, it's time to start thinking about your plan for ensuring that lawn stays looking as lush as it has all spring. There are many things you can do to help your lawn is green and beautiful despite the summer heat and humidity. Here are five of our best summer lawn care tips: Feed your lawn with fertilizer during the early part of the summer. This gives your lawn a fighting chance to make it through heat, intense sun, and potential drought. The nutrients in the fertilizer help feed the grass blades, strengthening them to withstand what summer hits it with. Be wise with summer lawn watering. This means about one inch of water per week when it's very hot as well as deeper, yet less frequent, watering. Also, water early in the day to cut down on evaporation. Mow regularly but don't cut the grass too short. When your grass is taller, it can grow deeper roots and help shade the surrounding area while also becoming more grass tolerant. Therefore, mow it at two to three inches. Also, sharpen mower blades to cut more precisely. Consider changing your lawn to accommodate high-traffic areas. Do you have that part of the lawn where everyone seems to walk across because it's a short cut to your business? Consider installing stepping stones or another type of walkway here rather than having a lawn that shows signs of wear and tear. Know summer lawn bugs and issues so you can treat them immediately. This includes summer insect infestations from insects like chinch bugs, fire ants, fleas, and mosquitoes. Or, your lawn might experience fungal problems like powdery mildew and brown patch. There are also grubs that appear in the summer, so know how to treat these or get a lawn care professional to help you. Contact us now to learn more about how we can help with your summer commercial lawn.

The Difference Between Sod and Seed

Pugh's Earthworks is one of the largest landscape design, installation and maintenance firms in the Mid South area. Our clients include some of the premier office buildings, hotels, hospitals, churches and cemeteries in the cities we operate. In addition to the commercial customers we serve, we also provide landscape services for Home Owners Associations (HOAs), Condo Owners Associations (COA’s) and individual residential homeowners. Pugh's Earthworks Offering Commercial Lawn Maintenance What commercial property wouldn't want to show off a lush lawn to welcome their customers to their place of business? All it takes is the right lawn preparation and lawn maintenance process. But, what are the differences between sod and seed for a beautiful lawn? There are numerous benefits that sod provides for your commercial lawn. Here's why. Although the cost to lay sod can be expensive and requires a lot of manual labor, which is why so many people immediately opt for seed or reseed for their lawn care, there are more advantages if you use sod. To sod, you must remove old grass, weed the soil, and level of the planting area. Then, you'll need to roll out heavy rolls of sod and water extensively.  However, seeding your lawn can be just as expensive and take a long time to see if it worked. The seeds could float away in the water or be eaten by birds.  In the meantime, your landscape looks barren and unattractive. Plus, the grass may come in unevenly. It's like growing a beard with stubble and unequal hair growth. In contrast and despite the work and cost, sod gives you an instant lawn. It only takes it a few weeks to start growing and establish itself. Plus, it looks even and offers a beautiful appearance. Nor will it attract birds and will not wash away. The decision to seed or sod should be made carefully. It's something that a professional commercial landscape company can help you decide on, offering the pros and cons as well as cost comparisons. Just remember that sod is quick, easy to install, requires much less water, and almost instantly usable. Contact us to learn more about sod versus seed and how we can give you a beautiful commercial lawn!

The Benefits of Recycling Grass Clippings

Pugh's Earthworks is one of the largest landscape design, installation and maintenance firms in the Mid South area. Our clients include some of the premier office buildings, hotels, hospitals, churches and cemeteries in the cities we operate. In addition to the commercial customers we serve, we also provide landscape services for Home Owners Associations (HOAs), Condo Owners Associations (COA’s) and individual residential homeowners. Pugh's Earthworks Offering Commercial Landscape Maintenance and Design Most people bag up their lawn clippings and throw these away as part of lawn maintenance, usually in a green bin that is designated for garden waste. It's important to remove the grass clippings from the lawn should they smother a lawn or lead to thatch buildup. However, there are many reasons to consider recycling grass clippings. First, grass clippings are an excellent organic source of nitrogen. Second, clippings also can help to conserve water in two ways. They are 90% water and help return moisture to the soil. Additionally, these clippings help to return organic material to the soil, which also conserves water. Consider using a mulching lawnmower. It has an extra blade that is designed to chop and grind grass. From there, the mulching lawnmower can spread the clippings over the lawn. By spreading it thinner over the entire lawn, the clippings rapidly decompose and return to the soil. It is also possible to accomplish that with a rotary mower. To help combat thatch buildup or lawn suffocation, mow more regularly and don't cut more than one-third of the grass blade. Als, mow when the grass is dry. Wet grass is what spreads the clippings across the lawn unevenly. You can also recycle grass clippings by using it as mulch in your garden. The nitrogen supply also enriches a compost pile. Be sure to check back for more lawn care tips!

It’s Not Too Late to Plant Shrubs

Garden shrubs can be both ornamental and practical. Many shrubs offer scented flowers and colorful foliage. However, shrubs also provide a great way to add privacy and hide anything unsightly around your commercial property like trash cans, air conditioner units, and more. That way, you can present a much more attractive landscape. There is still time this spring to plant shrubs around your commercial property. You can choose from a variety of methods for planting shrubs varies, depending on whether the shrubs you are planting have a burlap rootball or bare roots or they are being replanted from a container. Here are some ways to plant shrubs. First, you'll need to identify the most ideal locations around your commercial property for the shrubs. Select shrubs that thrive in your climate as well as find a location that meets the shrubs' needs for sun or shade, moisture, and soil composition. When picking a location, know how big the shrub will grow to ensure there is enough space. Remember that roots spread laterally so keep that in mind for planting location. Measure the height of the roots from the ground to the “root flare,” which is the part of the shrub at the base of the trunk where roots begin to spread out. Once you’ve measured the rootball, then dig out the soil and place it on a tarp.  After digging the hole for the shrub, fill it with water. Test to see how it drains by leaving the water for 24 hours. If it has drained away, then there is good drainage for the shrub. Place the shrub in the hole. Always move these shrubs by the roots rather than grabbing them the trunk or branches. The root flare should be at or slightly above the natural ground level. If it's wrapped in burlap, cut that and any string or wire from the root ball. Next, fill the hole gradually. Don’t add fertilizer, peat moss, or mulch at this point. Make sure there are no rocks or debris around the shrub. Water the shrub and allow the water to soak into the soil for several hours after you plant. From there, you'll water it approximately once per week. If you would prefer professional assistance with planting shrubs around your commercial property, contact us now to learn more!
