The folks at Pugh's Earthworks have the training, knowledge and dedication to help commercial and residential clients every step of the landscape design process. Our team will not stop the process until our customers are 100% delighted with the outcome. Q: After I have decided upon the landscape rooms of my design, what are my next steps in the design process? A: Now that you have thought about your property in terms of rooms and established some priorities, it’s time to walk around your property and inventory and evaluate it. Doing so will help you objectively consider its positive aspects and limitations. There may be some things that are not possible once the property (site) is inventoried, while new possibilities may emerge. In any case, your design priorities must fit the site, or you will have problems. For example, planting a rose garden (a priority) in a shaded site (site inventory) will quickly lead to decline in rose quality. A decision needs to be made; modify the planting and install shade-loving plants in that area, or modify the site by removing trees and/or thinning out tree branches to improve sunlight for the roses. Begin by making a scaled drawing of your property; this is the “base plan.” Include property lines, house, garage, other structures, driveway, and sidewalks on this plan. Stone Foot Path Pugh’s Earthworks Success Story The success story of Pugh's Earthworks is special. Through the trials and challenges of running a business which was a new concept for the Pugh's brothers, these three close brothers found a way to make it work. Today they run a premier landscaping company with five offices in three states. Their success captured the attention of Lawn and Landscape Magazine which is the leading B2B publication serving the $70 Billion landscaping and lawn care industry. The August 2017 edition of Lawn and Landscape Magazine featured Pugh’s Earthworks. The transition from brothers to business partners was not easy for the Pugh's. In fact, two of the brothers came to blows in a conference room, which eventually led to family counseling. When their father suddenly passed away, leaving behind several flower shops in Memphis, they had to learn how to work together – or they would fall apart. When Bill Pugh died in 1987, Mark, president and owner, was only 16, Tim, vice president and owner was 19 and Michael, chief financial officer was 22. The older Pugh's helped deliver flowers for years. But Mark’s busy sports schedule didn’t allow him to work regular hours, so he landscaped around the neighborhood. They had no idea they would  end up owning their father’s business, spinning off several companies or expanding throughout the region. “I actually took a leave of absence from my job for a few months to help dad’s partner with some of dad’s responsibilities because I thought we were going to sell the business,” says Michael, who was managing a sporting goods store at the time. Instead, with their mom’s help, Tim, bought out their father’s business partner to keep the flower shops in the family. “One day my brother is driving a delivery van, the next day he’s the owner of the company,” Michael says. “The employees were twice our age; they had known us since we were [...]

Beautiful Multi Terrain Landscaped Cemetery Lands Little Rock Landscaping Little Rock Arkansas is a beautiful city. With its rolling hills and river it is breathtaking. For a landscaper it can be a challenge and it takes the expertise of qualified and skilled landscaping company like Pugh's Earthworks to properly address the terrain variations. When landscaping slopes and hillsides there are several things landscapers must keep in mind. Trying to walk on slopes and can be difficult so careful planning to ensure a safe walk way is important. Then with hillsides there is always the potential hazard of soil runoff. Barriers have to be constructed so the soil remains intact. Keeping valuable nutrients from washing away with the runoff is critical. Properly landscaped, hillsides can be spectacular. Advantages to a hill is that you have a better view to visualize and create a perfect combination of plants, flowers and erosion preventing materials. Sometimes it is evident that additional topsoil will be needed if the hill is mostly rocks. Planting the proper flowers and shrubs in the available pockets will render a spectacular landscaped area. In addition to the variation of flowers and plants, stone walls are also a wonderful addition to a hilly landscape. Not only are they attractive but they are extremely functional with offering several benefits. In addition to helping to retain the soil and the nutrients, the stone can create its own micro-climate. This is because stone heats up from the sun and tends to retain that heat during the night. This often allows plants to grow in that area when they would not grow in other surrounding areas. Having a building that is situated on a hill can be stunning to the viewer.  The addition of stairways, paths and the proper combination of shrubs, flowers and plants can add so much beauty and property value. Choosing tough plants that will not require routine trimming is important. Therefore often evergreens are a great [...]

Mowing and Pruning Recommendations For Optimal Lawn and Plant Health

Pugh's Earthworks Tennessee's Landscape Maintenance Services For All Seasons Pugh's Earthworks provides commercial landscape design and maintenance services throughout Tennessee, including Memphis, Jackson, and Nashville plus we service commercial lawns and landscaping in Little Rock, Arkansas.  Our services include landscape design and maintenance for lawns and landscape areas for residential and business clients. As winter starts to slowly draw to a close and spring is in our sights, it's time to start thinking about the best approaches to mowing and pruning to achieve optimal lawn and plant health. Here are some of our tips for taking care of both: Let's start with trimming plants. The first trimming should occur just when the winter months are ending. This helps prepare plants for a healthy growing season. When it comes to pruning, this should only generally occur at the end of fall so hopefully you've already done this. However, if you have flowering shrubs, pruning should occur in the springtime after the flowers have bloomed. This will encourage thicker and fuller growth as well as more blooms during the following year. If you decide not to trim or prune, it can mean compromising the health of your plants. They will be susceptible to diseases and infestations as well as just be stunted by not having dead material removed. Now, let's look at lawn health and maintenance. First, don't cut your grass too short. A scalped lawn can make it vulnerable to diseases and weeds. infestation. Plus, the scalped turf can expose soil and lead to a poorly developed root system. Second, make sure you regularly sharpen your mower blade so you can make clean cuts to the trash when you mow. This way, you don't tear the grass, making an uneven edges that invites disease and pests into the grass blades. Keep an extra blade on hand so you can switch out blades while one is being maintenance. Next, consider leaving some grass clippings on the lawn after cutting, which is known as grasscycling. These grass clippings can provide as much as 25 percent of your lawn’s fertilizer needs. This helps provide good nutrients for a healthy lawn. Finally, don't mow in the same direction or pattern each time. This can end up compacting the soil and creating ruts that diminishes the lawn's health and attracts weeds. Contact us if you need help with mowing and pruning this season. We're here to help!

It’s Not Too Late to Plant Shrubs in the Spring

Spring is planting season. That's why container-grown shrubs do best when they are planted in the early spring. This is because the shrubs tend to still be dormant or just breaking through that period. It's important to plant as soon as the frost has left the ground. This will give the shrubs the most time to grow some new roots and settle in for the spring growing season. To plant shrubs in the spring, you don't need to dig a deep planting hole to encourage root growth. Most shrub roots spread widely, so focus on making a wider hole. Also, consider making a square hole because this gives the roots a better way to spread out. Just before planting, try watering the container-grown shrubs with a liquid feed and soak the roots of bare-root shrubs in the liquid feed as well. This can also help protect the roots from any fungus or other issues. We realize that, with commercial property, it may be challenging to find the time to plant shrubs and add these plants to your overall landscape. However, we can provide a commercial landscaping service on a monthly basis that ensures you have an attractive and welcoming landscape no matter what season of the year. And, when spring seasons arrives like it has now, our commercial landscape maintenance service includes planting trees, shrubs, and flowers as well as fertilizing, seeding, and more. We welcome the opportunity to bring your commercial landscape back to life after the harsh winter season. Contact us today to learn more!

Do’s and Don’ts of Summer Landscaping

When it comes to each season of the year, there are things you want to do and avoid with landscaping. In following these rules of landscaping, you'll find that certain actions promote the beauty and growth of a lawn, greenery, and flowers while others don't. To help your own landscape this summer, here are some do's and don'ts, starting with your summer lawn. DO think ahead when it comes to fertilizing your lawn. Planning a specific time for it will make sure you feed it appropriately and maintain its lush look the whole year round.  DO use organic lawn food that offers the best nutrients for your lawn. Read all the directions before putting it on your lawn. DON'T burn your lawn by putting down fertilizer when it is hot and dry. Be sure to add plenty of water to keep the grass moist when fertilizing. If too hot outside, it's better to wait on fertilizing your lawn. DON'T let your lawn go dormant by letting the grass die down. It takes a lot to make it come back. Or, it may not come back at all. That will mean more money and time you don't want to spend. Now, let's look at your entire summer landscape for some other tips: DO have a plan for what to plant and where. Think about what gets sun and shade as well as where water can automatically reach your plants and flowers. Then, plant accordingly. This plan will save you money and increase the chances of a beautiful look. DON'T overdo what you are planting. Keep it natural with the flowers, trees, and plants as well as accessories like pathways and fountains rather than put too much. DO try something new like a different type of flower or shrub to add new interest to your overall aesthetic. DO use drought-tolerant plants and look to add as much as possible that doesn't require as much water. DO bring in a specialist or professional for your commercial landscape so you can enjoy the look without having to do all the work. Contact us today to learn more!

Time to Change Out Those Flower Beds

Flower beds provide a beautiful and eye-catching feature to any commercial or residential garden. With a burst of color, these beautiful floral displays can provide enjoyment the entire year round. However, flowers tend to provide that beauty on a seasonal basis. That means that, at certain points in the year, it's time to change those flowers out for others that are in-season. At this time of year, it means going with flowers that flourish in hotter temperatures. Here's how to re-do a flower bed. The first step is to clean out the existing flower bed.  Remove old perennials, weeds, and any debris. Think of it as a clean slate so you can start again with seasonal blooms. This may be a good time to change the shape of your flower bed. Rather than going with that traditional rectangular look, why not add some curves to it by drawing out new lines with the soil? Now, it's time to add new soil to your flower bed. Dig up rocks, roots, and any debris before putting a layer of garden-specific soil. It should be about six inches deep. You can also add compost and leaf mold. This will boost soil nutrition. Let your flower bed settle for 30 to 60 days before planting. Work with your local garden center on the ideal flowers for this time of year. Once you have an idea of what works, then you can select the colors and varieties to use that will fit your space and garden style. This is where you can be creative. As you plant the flowers in the bed, be sure to add enough water to make puddles under each flower. Add a thin layer of mulch. This will help prevent weeds and allow the soil to retain moisture even during the hot summer ahead. Of course, if you don't have the time to re-do your commercial flower beds, consider turning to professionals like Pugh's Earthworks. Contact us today!

Container Gardens Make Properties More Attractive

Container gardens make a lovely addition around entrances and in places where a little greenery is needed to soften and decorate. Bedding plants including annuals, perennials, small shrubs and ornamental trees make excellent mixes for container gardening. Rule of thumb is to have a tall plant in the center and draping flora around the edges. Fill in other areas with a combination of blooming and green plants keeping in mind not to over crowd the planter and drown out some of the mix. Pugh's Earthworks maintains these container gardens on some of our properties where there is enough water and shade to keep them beautiful all summer long.
