Contact Pugh’s Earthworks to Protect Your Commercial Property in the Summer Heat

Pugh's Earthworks For those of us living in the middle parts of the country, the heat dome is settling in for the long haul. While there is not much rain in the forecast, triple digit temperatures definitely are. Commercial Landscaping is vital to keep lawns, trees, flowers and shrubs from dying and looking their best during the extreme heat of the summer. Pugh's Earthworks is the Commercial Landscaping Company to contract with. They are experts in all facets of Commercial Landscaping and will know what steps to take to protect your Commercial Property from the extreme summer heat. Water Pugh's Earthworks can install an automatic sprinkler system if you do not have one. That is one of our services and we are very experienced with installation and maintenance. An automatic sprinkler system helps ensure that your lawn receives the right amount of water at the right time. Keeping the soil moist is good but deep watering is more important that frequent short waterings. Grass needs at least an inch of water weekly. However, you do not need to water every day. It is actually infrequent watering that encourages deep root growth. Water must get below the root zone to help nourish the roots so they can learn to grow deeper in search of moisture and nutrients. Having a lawn with deep roots helps protect it when it gets so hot during those summer months. It is those deep roots that hold the water and keep the grass cooler so that it will not die out from the excessive heat. Here are some additional lawn maintenance tips to promote those deep roots for your lawn. Soil Start with cultivating the topsoil. Sandy loam or well-drained loam gives roots the ability to stretch out and grow. If you have sandy soil, know that it does not retain water very well. That is when you will need to add organic matter, which delivers the necessary nutrients and increases water retention. Mowing Mow frequently and keep grass at the right height for the type of grass you have. For example, grass with large crowns or clumps, which is typically Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue, should be mowed at a much taller height. In contrast, zoysia grass should have a shorter mowing. Whatever kind of grass you have, be sure to mow no more than one-third of the blade lengths at a time. This stimulates growth and protects the roots. Fertilizer Fertilize at the end of the growing season to achieve strong root growth. Slow-release fertilizers are often touted as the best for promoting the growth of the grass roots. AgriGro bio stimulants have also been proven to increase root growth. This is because these substances help plants endure environmental stress better than those that were not treated. Other Maintenance You can also encourage strong roots by giving them plenty of room to grow. This means pulling any weeds, which have root systems that like to choke the roots of the grass. Plus, it involves periodic aeration, which [...]

Hire Pugh’s Earthworks to Maximize the Efficiency of Summer Watering

Pugh's Earthworks has Operations in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi Many parts of the country including the Mid-South, have had a very cool and wet May. However, it will not be long until the dry hot weather makes it critical to practice effective Summer Watering. Pugh's Earthworks is one of the largest commercial landscape design, installation and maintenance firms in the Mid-South area. Our clients include some of the premier office buildings, hotels, hospitals, churches and cemeteries in the cities we operate. In addition to the commercial customers we serve, we also provide landscape services for Homeowners Associations (HOAs), Condo Owners Associations (COA’s) and individual residential homeowners. A properly designed Commercial Landscape Sprinkler system, like the ones designed and installed by the Pugh's Earthworks Certified Landscape Technicians, will ensure that the lawn and plants on your property receive the exact amount of water during the summer. Protecting these plants is important as it is expensive to replace them. During the summer months, the hot weather and intense sunlight are tough for summer plants and lawns to take. That is why we often refresh both with extra water. However, there is still a need to water wisely during these hot months to be careful with water and get the maximum impact from your watering without wasting any of this precious resource. Below are some tips on how to water wisely to use less water as well as give your plants and lawn just the right amount: Water weekly: Pick one day a week to water your lawn and plants, preferably a time in the morning or evening where the sun and heat won't evaporate it too quickly. You may need to adjust it should there be summer thunderstorms or if you notice a better time where the water sticks around. Water deeply: Before you overwater, it's important to understand what this means and how much deeply involves. Check the soil and see if water has permeated the top six inches of clay soil or eight to 12 inches if you have loamy soil. Make sure the water is not stagnating on the top as this could mean your soil is compacted and it may lead to plant rot. Think long, soaking rain rather than many several quick sprinkles. Water when plants are ready: Plants will tell you when they are thirsty. Leaves will wilt or droop. The leaves may also yellow, curl up, or drop off. That means they really could use some water. Water in the morning: By focusing your plant and lawn watering on this point in the day, it gives the plants and lawn a way to fill up on water they can use throughout the day. Water plants when they need it: Besides when they are thirsty, there are other times where a plant or lawn may most need water. This includes giving more water to baby seedlings and transplants to help them because their root systems are not yet developed and acclimated to the soil.  Another group of plants that need water [...]

Pugh’s Earthworks is experienced with Summer Commercial Lawn Care

Pugh's Earthworks commits to strive in all we do for total customer satisfaction May has now arrived and already temperatures are expected to be in the nineties and above in some regions. Will not be long before the summer heat sets in for the long haul. Proper Summer Commercial Lawn Care is critical to keep lawns looking good and staying healthy. The certified and professional Landscape Technicians at Pugh's Earthworks, have the knowledge and tools to keep Commercial Property lawns in tip top shape during the hot summer. Being exposed to excessive heat not only takes its toll on us humans but it also is difficult to bear for nature. Meaning plants, flowers, and lawns. However, you can still enjoy a healthy Commercial Landscape even in the midst of extreme summer heat when you hire Pugh's Earthwork's. There are numerous actions that can be taken during the extreme heat of summer. Our team at Pugh's Earthworks is trained in all aspects of climate adjustments as it relates to Commercial Landscaping. Below are a few of the things we are mindful of. Length of the Lawn Often people like to mow the lawn very short. It looks nice and neat and gives the lawn that well-kept golf course look. However, when this happens and it is super-hot outside, your lawn suffers and turns brown. This is because the lawn is restricted on how much energy it can produce for growth. However, if you do not trim it too short, then the grass can develop stronger roots. And it is those stronger roots that support plants that can tolerate the stress that heat puts on it during the summer months. Use the One-Third Rule To determine the correct height to cut your grass, apply the “one-third” rule. This rule says never remove more than one-third of the grass height at one time. This keeps the lawn cooler because it removes less plant tissue. For example, if you normally cut your lawn at 2.5 inches, increase it to 3 inches during the hot summer months. Do not Over Water A big mistake so many people make, is to think the heat means grass needs more water. However, all that does is create another problem. The soil then tends to be constantly wet. This causes the grass roots to be deprived of oxygen. This can make them more susceptible to disease because diseases tend to thrive in wet conditions. Therefore, the drier the grass and soil, the less risk for a disease. Although you want to ensure hydration, you do not need to water daily to get that. Keep Mower Blades Sharp When grass is cut with a sharp mower blade, it will heal faster. Then, it is less susceptible to stress and disease that comes during the hot season. Also, the sharper mower blades will prevent a brown appearance. Use a Mulching Mower Rather than bagging up the lawn clippings, return them to the lawn by using a mulching mower. Clippings act as [...]

A few years ago, management realized how inefficient being a paper-based office was. After researching options, the team elected to go paper-less. Below is a short story on how that all came about. " Michael Pugh, co-owner and CFO of Pugh's Earthworks based in Memphis, TN, says he first began thinking about transitioning to a paperless office back in 2005. Since that time the business has grown dramatically. Three additional branches have been opened. The volume of paper being generated daily—not to mention the inefficiencies tied to the handling of all that paper—soon spiraled out of control. Pugh reached his breaking point in 2010. "We were simply out of room at our main facility in Memphis," Pugh recalls. "We already had one entire office stuffed full of filing cabinets. Additionally, we had well over 100 three-ring binders with work orders from the past couple of years. We're talking about the type of paperwork you don't need to put your hands on every day, but still important enough that you don't want to shred it. I did not know what to do. I was looking at having to pay someone off site to store our paper. That was tough to swallow." Pugh happened upon a company called Cabinet NG at a QuickBooks user's conference. He learned about a product called CNG-SAFE, a complete document management and workflow software product. His curiosity over the concept of paperless was revitalized". It is small steps like these that add up to a Best-in-Class Commercial Landscaping company. In every facet of the business, the Pugh's Earthworks team maintains excellence by taking pride in their work and staying curious for ways to learn about improvements. In the dead of winter when there is little color to break up the mundane, Evergreens can add that spark of color that is pleasing to the eye. A couple of good choices for Evergreens are the Blue Dwarf Spruce which adds a blueish tone and the Gold Thread False Cypress which adds sparking yellows. If you are a lover of wildlife, attracting birds can be more of a challenge in the winter. However, by keeping your bird feeders full of food and using heated dog bowls for water, birds will be sure to stop by and add a sense of life to the dead of winter. Adding attractive lighting will help to amplify the beauty of your landscaping especially since there is less sunlight during the winter months. Many commercial businesses add holiday lighting to their building(s) as well. Repurposing existing decorations like flower pots, barrels, bird baths etc. will help as well. By planting annuals or using pieces of sculpture in these existing decorations it will add to their aesthetic value during the winter months. Pugh’s Earthworks is the commercial landscaping company to hire for your year round landscaping needs

Pugh's Earthworks Like many other processes, commercial landscaping is a year round task. Each season renders different needs for plants, trees and lawns. When you hire a professional commercial landscaping company with the skills offered by Pugh's Earthworks, you can rest assured that your commercial property will be kept in pristine condition year round. Now that fall has arrived and the weather is changing, it is time to take a more in-depth look at fall commercial lawn care services and what that involves. The fall commercial lawn care service includes seeding, dethatching, aerating, over-seeding, and fertilizing. Mowing -This is the time to start decreasing the height of your lawnmower. You will want to end up somewhere around an inch and a half high on your lawn height. The frequency of mowing is also determined by how fast the grass grows during this time. Take one-third of the blade or less. Also, it is better to mow in the evening so the sun is not beating down on it. Weeding - By this point, the weeds should be disappearing. There may be a few stragglers left to take care of before winter sets in and they completely go away. Trees and Shrubs -This is the time to also pay attention to trees and shrubs as well as the lawn, doing deep root fertilization. This provides your landscape with the essential nutrients it needs for the winter. Raking - It is very important to remove all leaves that have built up on your lawn. If you leave them, they will decompose and use up any soil moisture plus invite insects to your lawn. This will all cause damage, including dead spots on the lawn that will be a welcome home for weeds in the springtime. Aerating - Because lawns become compacted over time, this can reduce air pockets that are necessary pathways for nutrients and water to reach grass roots. That is why aeration becomes an annual event that is usually done in the fall. It loosens up the soil, returning those air pockets to the lawn. Over Seeding - Adding more seeds to your lawn can help fix dead spots and creating grass that is lush and beautiful for the upcoming spring season. Fall Fertilizing - A special fall fertilizer keeps the lawn healthy during the autumn months so that it has the nutrients it needs to get through the winter. Sometimes Fall is a great time to apply new Sod to your commercial lawn and the experts at Pugh’s Earthworks will know

Pugh's Earthworks Often the effects of a long summer can take a severe toll on lawns. In these instances, sod application may be the best solution to help restore the landscape. The professionals at Pugh's Earthworks know when sodding is the most advantageous corrective measure for commercial property lawns. Some of the clear and obvious benefits to sod is that it provides for an immediate lawn! Though there are arguments for sod application in the spring verses the fall, below are some things to consider when sodding appears to be the right solution. Sod can burn easily under the scorching Summer Sun which is near by if sod is laid in the Spring. By applying sod in the Fall the temperatures are cooler allowing the root system to develop over the Fall, Winter and Spring months. Sod will not require as much water to survive if applying in the Fall. The reason is because the grass is beginning the dormancy cycle and the roots will not require as much water. When it comes to the actual laying of the sod, it is always best to use the services of a professional landscaping company like Pugh's Earthworks. Our experts will know the proper amount of compost and fertilizer to mix with the soil. This is very important for the sod to take hold and get off to a great start. During the first few weeks, the Pugh's Earthworks certified technicians watch over the new sod. Proper amounts of water must be applied if the Fall season is dry and absent normal rain fall. Taking root is the ultimate goal for the new sod. The landscape technicians will be viewing sections of the sod to make sure new root growth is starting. Purchasing sod and having it installed is expensive. To ensure that your newly purchased sod has the best chance of success, hire the professionals at Pugh's Earthworks. We have the trained staff, the proper equipment and the burning desire to make sure our clients are satisfied.           Pugh’s Earthworks Credentials/Affiliations/Degrees, Certifications The Pugh’s Earthworks team has all the proper credentials, degrees and certifications necessary to deliver top quality landscape and lawn maintenance design, installation and maintenance services. Pugh’s Earthworks works year round to keep commercial landscapes looking their best

Pugh's Earthworks The temperatures are definitely starting to dip. I stepped out on the front porch early this morning and there was a stark change in the temperature from just a week ago. The professionals at Pugh's Earthworks know that landscaping processes do not stop as the growing season ends. Below is a Q&A excerpt from Pugh's Earthworks: How does lawn fertilizing affect clipping production? This question will be answered in two parts, beginning with the cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass) and then the warm-season grasses (Zoysia grass and bermudagrass). Cool-season grasses should be fertilized primarily in late Summer and Fall (September and October). Nutrients applied at this time encourage root growth and turf thickening. Fall applications also result in early spring green-up without causing excessive leafy top growth. Given proper fall fertilization, spring applications may not be required. High rates of nitrogen (more than 1 pound per 1,000 square feet) in the spring will stimulate unnecessary flushes of leaf growth and may predispose the lawn to greater summer damage. No more than one spring fertilization should occur. This can be in late March or early April with a weed-and-feed treatment for crabgrass or in May with a slow-release nitrogen source. Warm-season grasses should be fertilized when the grass begins its active growth in late spring and early summer (May-June). Again, for slow and even growth, use a fertilizer containing a slow-release nitrogen source. Warm-season grasses should not be fertilized in September and October. Everything you do in the fall can help your lawn make it through a harsh winter season, including giving it the food it needs to support root growth. Here are five tips for fertilizing your lawn as part of your lawn maintenance care during the fall months: Apply lawn fertilizer round two to three weeks before the ground is likely to freeze. You can look online for the frost date for your particular area and then plan accordingly. On average, that means applying fertilizer to your fall lawn around mid-October. Fertilize in the fall either in the morning or the early evening. Fall temperatures during the middle of the day can still be too warm, which could cause the fertilizer to burn the grass. Mow the lawn right before you plan to fertilize. When doing so, be sure to leave some of the grass clippings. This green material can help the roots. Do not fertilize before any scheduled rain. The rain will only cause the fertilizer to run off the lawn and work against your plan of fertilizing it. If it has recently rained, also wait until the grass blades appear dry and then you can apply the fertilizer. Continue mowing throughout the fall season but begin to drop the blade down the lowest setting as the fall season draws to a close. Aerate the soil as well to ensure that the fertilizer, water, and oxygen can reach the grass roots. This gets the essential nutrients where they need to be to further [...]

Adjust your landscape appearance for the season with the help of the experts at Pugh’s Earthworks

Pugh's Earthworks   Every season brings different weather conditions that impact your commercial landscape. That is why it makes sense to regularly adjust your commercial landscape to fit the season. This creates a year-round beautiful and welcoming look to your commercial landscape. The Pugh's Earthworks certified landscape technicians are educated on exactly what types of plants are acclimated to each of our four seasons. By rotating the plants that are used in commercial landscaping, properties are kept attractive. This strategy is part of the service provided by Pugh's Earthworks. Absent the use of a skilled company like Pugh's Earthworks, year-round commercial landscaping techniques which involves selecting trees and shrubs, can be overwhelming. Since spring is the next season coming up, let's start there. After a drab, cold winter, you will want to show some color in your commercial landscape. Look for the earliest-blooming shrubs, trees, and flowers to get ready to plant. You'll most likely start enjoying various colors by mid-spring. And, to carry on your staggered planting strategy, summer should consist of trees and shrubs that are heartier and can withstand the heat and humidity of the season. From there, fall offers a lot of opportunity for colorful foliage and deep colors across shrubs and trees. When winter arrives again, most of the plants and trees will go into hibernation, so be prepared to focus on colors like white, brown, and gray for a few months with the exception of the seasonal evergreen tree. Of course it is not just the plants and trees that are of concern. There is also your year-round commercial lawn care to consider. This area of your landscape should also have a strategy to keep it inviting throughout each season. With spring nearly here, it's time to sharpen those lawnmower blades and clean up all the debris. Keep an eye out for weeds and begin fertilizing. From there, each season will involve trimming, watering, and feeding until the lawn goes dormant again in winter. Below are some of the typical landscape plants and trees used at different times each year: Fall - In the fall, the key element that makes a beautiful and colorful landscape is the changing foliage. Two of the all time favorites for bright fall foliage are the Maple Tree and Sumac Shrub. Winter - This is probably the most challenging season. Plants that add color are Evergreen Trees and Shrubs. Another option for color is the Red Osier Dogwood. Spring - After the long gray Winter season, people are clamoring for colorful plants and blooms. There is a long list of those but for early color the Forsythia, Lilac and Mountain Laurel. Summer - Common are the Crepe Myrtle, Rose of Sharon and Hydrangea Shrubs. And, if you need expert and professional help making your commercial landscape fit with the season, then you should contact us today at Pugh's Earthworks to learn more about our commercial landscaping design and maintenance packages. Rose of Sharon   The Pugh's Earthworks [...]
