Frequently Asked Questions and Answers about Irrigation Installation Q: How will I benefit from an in-ground sprinkler system? A: Since hand watering is done on a random basis, and at irregular intervals, an automatic sprinkler system will actually, in most cases, use less water. It will also disperse the water at an even rate, and for a predetermined amount of time. This allows you to water sunny and shady areas for different periods of time, and to water when it is most efficient. One obvious benefit is the ability to continue a watering program while you are away on vacation, etc. Q: How long does a system take to put in? A: It would depend on the area that is trying to be covered. An average size lawn (@15,000 sq. ft.) can usually be done in one full day, depending on the situation. A large country lawn can take anywhere from two to four days. On average, we spend one to two days on a job. Q: What is a back flow device, and why do I need one on my sprinkler system? A: A back flow device is generally a brass assembly that will prevent any water from the sprinkler system from getting into the drinking water supply, and are required by all municipalities. There are many different types of these, and each individual municipality has differing requirements for the installation. Q: What type of maintenance does the system require? A: All systems need to be winterized at the end of the season. This is done by attaching an air hose to a fitting on the water line, and blowing all of the water out of the system. Most people that we install systems for simply turn it back on in the springtime themselves. We do offer the service of opening systems for the season. The quality of the products used initially, and of the overall installation, play an important part in the long [...]

Checking the condition of the lawn Summer Lawn Watering Most lawn experts and research indicates that turf grasses need an estimated 1 inch of water per week to stay healthy and green. Although occasionally if the summer heat is too intense you may have to let the lawn go into an almost dormant state. In order to have a strong lawn you need to encourage deep root growth. In addition we all need to be aware of water conservation. It is a precious resource to be used wisely. Below are some tips that experts recommend. When to water - Signs of footprints and a darker color in the lawn are typically signs of early drought stress. Water infrequently - When you water make sure the watering is deep down to the roots. This creates a deep root growth pattern and encourages less weed growth. Water early in the day - If you water in the heat of the day your water will evaporate. If you water at night it can create fungal growth and lawn damage. Spread the water evenly - Try to avoid flooding some spots while missing the water on others. Water conservation awareness -  Mowing the lawn higher, avoiding excess nitrogen fertilizer, limiting foot traffic, discontinuing pesticides and careful placement of the sprinklers so as not to waste water on the driveway or street are all things that can help to conserve water. Avoid over-watering - As the water is absorbed monitor your watering to ensure there are no areas of standing water afterwards. Monitor rainfall - Watch the weather forecasts. If rain is expected do not water the lawn. Lawn Fertilization Summer Lawn Care Homeowners spend an average of 40 hours each year mowing according to Audubon.org. Of course that is only the mowing part, there is also the $8.5 billion spent on lawn care products like fertilizer, weed control and lawn equipment. According to experts in the field of gardening, below are some tips for lawn care during the summer months: Fertilizing  -  Typically fertilization is only required a couple of times per year. Experts agree that fertilization in the spring and then again in midsummer yields effective results in terms of lawn appearance and overall health. Specially blended fertilizers for lawns which contain high amounts of nitrogen stimulate growth and a deep green color. Feeding the lawn twice per year often results in excessive growth which can lead to additional watering and mowing needs. The type of fertilizer used also makes a difference according to experts. Many brands offer pre-emergent herbicides mixed in with the actual nitrogen. Pre-emergents are a tremendous aid in preventing weed growth. However, it is thought by many turf growers that it is best to use pre-emergents by themselves rather than the ones mixed in with lawn food. Fertilizer Spreading - When you feed the lawn it is always best to do it when the grass is dry. This is because if the grass is wet the grains of fertilizer can stick to blades of grass instead of going down to the soil as needed. If the fertilizer sticks to the wet blades it typically will result in chemical burning that will damage the lawn. Using a fertilizer spreader is the most effective tool. It is also important to load the spreader while it is setting on he sidewalk or driveway. Invariably there will be spillage as you load the spreader. This can be swept up and placed in the spreader if on the concrete but if the spillage is on the lawn itself it will result in [...]

Beautiful Estate Lawn   Handling Heat Stress on Lawns We all enjoy a lush, green, healthy lawn during the summer months. Using the services of a professional landscaping company like Pugh's Earthworks will help you ensure your lawn has a good chance of surviving the effects of summer heat. Common indicators that a lawn is under stress: Ghost prints -  A sure sign that your lawn is under stress is when you walk on it and the blades of grass do not rebound. Before calling in the professionals, there are a few things you can do in order to try and self diagnosis problems with your lawn. Below are some of those: Check to see if your lawn might have a chinch bug infestation. These are small black and white insects that you will see crawling between the blades of grass. Another pesky insect are grub worms. They will actually eat the roots of your lawn leaving it unable to survive. If you are able to tug on the sections [...]

Pugh's Earthworks creates beautiful landscapes that can increase healing and well being!   Beautiful Hospital Landscaping Landscaping Health Benefits Beyond the obvious benefits of landscaping being aesthetically pleasing to the eye and helpful for the property value, there are studies showing that nicely landscaped hospital gardens have healing benefits for patients and staff. The calming effects of natural views can reduce stress and speed up the process of healing. A study conducted by a research team by the name of Cooper-Marcus and Barnes in the late 90's showed measurable benefits to both patients and staff. Their study showed that the hospital staff members were much happier and more productive when they had the ability to go outside and unwind. In addition, patients they interviewed said that the hospital gardens created a welcomed change from the stress of treatments and fear of illness. For decades it has been evident that the stresses endured by healthcare workers can be overwhelming. Extremely long hours, difficultly and fatigue caused by shift changes, lack of control or authority over decisions and emotional demands of the job have taken a toll. These conditions have in some cases lowered job satisfaction which has the domino effect of increasing absenteeism or turnover.  These consequences obviously have an effect on the care patients may receive. Studies have shown that hospital workers can find peace and tranquility by escaping to an outside hospital garden. This magnifies the need for landscaping expertise. Professional landscaping adds all of the necessary elements that make a garden one of splendor. Nature has a way of letting us escape to a world of calm and serenity. It is easy to recognize that a healthcare worked who is allowed the time to meditate and escape from a demanding profession can ultimately benefit those patients in their care. It also lowers the employment costs for hospitals as it takes time and money to train new employees. For the patients and their families, a beautifully designed and landscaped hospital garden has been shown to [...]

Beautiful Multi Terrain Landscaped Cemetery Lands Little Rock Landscaping Little Rock Arkansas is a beautiful city. With its rolling hills and river it is breathtaking. For a landscaper it can be a challenge and it takes the expertise of qualified and skilled landscaping company like Pugh's Earthworks to properly address the terrain variations. When landscaping slopes and hillsides there are several things landscapers must keep in mind. Trying to walk on slopes and can be difficult so careful planning to ensure a safe walk way is important. Then with hillsides there is always the potential hazard of soil runoff. Barriers have to be constructed so the soil remains intact. Keeping valuable nutrients from washing away with the runoff is critical. Properly landscaped, hillsides can be spectacular. Advantages to a hill is that you have a better view to visualize and create a perfect combination of plants, flowers and erosion preventing materials. Sometimes it is evident that additional topsoil will be needed if the hill is mostly rocks. Planting the proper flowers and shrubs in the available pockets will render a spectacular landscaped area. In addition to the variation of flowers and plants, stone walls are also a wonderful addition to a hilly landscape. Not only are they attractive but they are extremely functional with offering several benefits. In addition to helping to retain the soil and the nutrients, the stone can create its own micro-climate. This is because stone heats up from the sun and tends to retain that heat during the night. This often allows plants to grow in that area when they would not grow in other surrounding areas. Having a building that is situated on a hill can be stunning to the viewer.  The addition of stairways, paths and the proper combination of shrubs, flowers and plants can add so much beauty and property value. Choosing tough plants that will not require routine trimming is important. Therefore often evergreens are a great [...]

Change the Fertilizer Mix During the Heat of Summer

The summer heat brings a lot of stress to a lawn. The lawn can become parched and damaged from the summer sun and the extreme heat. Although it's easy to understand when a lawn loses its luster in winter months, most of us don't want the sun to shine down on a brown lawn in the summer months.  That's when it's time to think about fertilizing as part of our summer lawn maintenance. Don’t Over Fertilize You need to be careful about fertilizing in the summer. Applying too much during the heat of summer can actually harm your lawn. You will end up burning your existing lawn. Plus, If your lawn is looking straggly in midsummer, resist the urge to fertilize. And, it can lead to a significant amount of tender growth that will struggle in the heat and actually not make it. Why Fertilize in the Summer? When you fertilize conservatively in the summer, you'll be able to achieve some benefits for your lawn. For example, the right amount of fertilizer protects and strengthens a lawn against insects, heat stress, drought, and foot traffic. Use Organic Fertilizer When using fertilizer during hot summer months, opt for organic fertilizers. They are naturally slow-release. This means that they are less likely to burn your lawn compared to chemical fertilizers. Weed and Feed Fertilizer Since weeds are harder to kill in the summer because of their strong root system you can still cautiously apply a weed and feed fertilizer throughout the summer months of June, July, and August.  Look for those that contain nitrogen,  phosphorus, and potassium because this helps to promote a healthy lawn. Recycling Grass and Fertilizing Another option is to recycle your grass clippings as you mow your lawn. you can leave the grass clippings on the lawn to decompose. These clippings will recycle nutrients that will then serve as fertilizer during the summer months. This can actually reduce your use of chemicals on your lawn, which then reduces the risk of overfertilizing while providing a green lawn even during those heat waves. Contact Us Contact us today to find out how we can help with your summer lawn to keep it green and healthy even during the heat of summer.
