It’s Not Too Late to Plant Shrubs

Garden shrubs can be both ornamental and practical. Many shrubs offer scented flowers and colorful foliage. However, shrubs also provide a great way to add privacy and hide anything unsightly around your commercial property like trash cans, air conditioner units, and more. That way, you can present a much more attractive landscape. There is still time this spring to plant shrubs around your commercial property. You can choose from a variety of methods for planting shrubs varies, depending on whether the shrubs you are planting have a burlap rootball or bare roots or they are being replanted from a container. Here are some ways to plant shrubs. First, you'll need to identify the most ideal locations around your commercial property for the shrubs. Select shrubs that thrive in your climate as well as find a location that meets the shrubs' needs for sun or shade, moisture, and soil composition. When picking a location, know how big the shrub will grow to ensure there is enough space. Remember that roots spread laterally so keep that in mind for planting location. Measure the height of the roots from the ground to the “root flare,” which is the part of the shrub at the base of the trunk where roots begin to spread out. Once you’ve measured the rootball, then dig out the soil and place it on a tarp.  After digging the hole for the shrub, fill it with water. Test to see how it drains by leaving the water for 24 hours. If it has drained away, then there is good drainage for the shrub. Place the shrub in the hole. Always move these shrubs by the roots rather than grabbing them the trunk or branches. The root flare should be at or slightly above the natural ground level. If it's wrapped in burlap, cut that and any string or wire from the root ball. Next, fill the hole gradually. Don’t add fertilizer, peat moss, or mulch at this point. Make sure there are no rocks or debris around the shrub. Water the shrub and allow the water to soak into the soil for several hours after you plant. From there, you'll water it approximately once per week. If you would prefer professional assistance with planting shrubs around your commercial property, contact us now to learn more!

Why Your Landscape May Need Renovation

Landscape maintenance is one thing, but your landscape may actually be in need of renovation. While landscape maintenance can help an area look tidier and trim, there are times when it may need more than mowing or weed removal. Maintenance involves mowing, fertilizing, pest control, pruning, trimming and weeding. Over time, though, that will not be enough as lawns, trees, and plants begin to grow quickly and crowd each other. Because it's constantly changing, you can't just maintain a landscape. You need to undertake landscape renovation. Now, it's time to think about restoring and revitalizing your lawn and flower beds.  This includes replacing, removing and upgrading plants for the season or providing a new look and feel to your commercial landscape.  Also, trees may have grown so much that their crowns need to be thinned or they are impacting concrete and parking lots so need to be removed.   Remulching also falls under landscape renovation to provide a nice appearance and good coverage against any weeds. Turf most definitely must undergo regular renovation. This is because lawns can become compacted so they need aeration and seeding. Other reasons for landscape renovation may be due to the need to create a more environmentally friendly landscape that uses little to no water. Upcoming special events or a new remodel to your commercial business may also signal the need for landscape renovation. Finally, Mother Nature also has a way of reminding us that there is a need for commercial landscape renovation. For example, storms, snow, ice, and flooding may require landscape cleanup and restoration. Be sure to plan out what you want to renovate with your commercial landscape before ripping everything out. Similar to home renovations, it costs less and goes smoothly when you plan everything in advance. Have a budget in mind to also ensure you make the financial decisions that are right for your business. Consider working with a professional commercial landscape company that has the knowledge, skill set, and experience to provide direction and guidance on what works for your commercial property and business budget. Contact us today to get an estimate on your commercial landscaping renovation project.

Changing Your Commercial Landscape To Fit Each Season

Every season brings different weather conditions that impact your commercial landscape. That's why it makes sense to regularly adjust your commercial landscape to fit the season. This creates a year-round beautiful and welcoming look to your commercial landscape. Here's what you can do to make sure your commercial landscape fits each season: Your first plan is to have an overall year-round commercial landscape and planning strategy that involves selecting trees and shrubs that you can prepare to replace the following season. That way, there will always be a focal point to your commercial landscape design. Since spring is the next season coming up, let's start there. After a drab, cold winter, you will want to show some color in your commercial landscape. Look for the earliest-blooming shrubs, trees, and flowers to get ready to plant. You'll most likely start enjoying various colors by mid-spring. And, to carry on your staggered planting strategy, summer should consist of trees and shrubs that are heartier and can withstand the heat and humidity of the season. From there, fall offers a lot of opportunity for colorful foliage and deep colors across shrubs and trees. When winter arrives again, most of the plants and trees will go into hibernation, so be prepared to focus on colors like white, brown, and gray for a few months with the exception of the seasonal evergreen tree. Then, there is your year-round commercial lawn care to consider. This area of your landscape should also have a strategy to keep it inviting throughout each season. With spring nearly here, it's time to sharpen those lawnmower blades and clean up all the debris. Keep an eye out for weeds and begin fertilizing. From there, each season will involve trimming, watering, and feeding until the lawn goes dormant again in winter. And, if you need expert and professional help making your commercial landscape fit with the season, then you should contact us today to learn more about our commercial landscaping design and maintenance packages.

Top Priority Winter Commercial Landscape Maintenance

We are deep into winter but have winter in our sights. Yet, there is still much to do when it comes to caring for your commercial landscape during the winter. Here are some tips to follow: Avoid walking on your lawn during winter. If it tends to freeze in your area, walking on it can lead to bare spots that will not go away when your grass returns from its seasonal dormancy. Tie up loosely branched evergreens and boxwoods that can become damaged from the weight of any snow that falls. Do not use a broom or snow shovel to get rid of snow that builds up on shrubs. If the limbs are frozen, they are fragile and can be easily damaged. Check on how your winterization efforts are doing with your irrigation system to make sure nothing is busted. Winterize all your landscaping maintenance tools. This includes emptying gas from all equipment engines and sharpening tools like pruners, spades, and shovels. Provide protection for early flowering plants, such as rhododendrons, camellias, and azaleas by covering them with burlap. Mulch planting beds to keep the roots of plants warm and protected. Remove any leaves and debris that have built up. When it gets closer to spring, start focusing on planting bed by pruning all shrubs, trees, and perennials.  Remove all dead wood and clean up the area to improve the health of all plants and flowers. Replant perennials like black-head Susans, daisies, and groundcovers.  Plant spring bulbs. Consider tree removal on any that are large and overgrown during this season. Regularly remove all snow and ice sidewalks throughout your commercial landscape to make it easier for customers to visit your business. Contact us at Pugh's Earthworks to consider our monthly commercial landscape maintenance services, including the winter season.

Winter is the Best Time to Prune Trees

When it comes to pruning trees to encourage new growth, there are only certain times of year when it is ideal to take on this maintenance task. And, one of these times is winter. Here's why. Dormant Pruning trees in winter when they are dormant is a common practice because it leads to more new growth in spring. IF you want to achieve that from your trees, then this is the time to prune them. Doing so supports current and future tree growth. Access In winter, the ground is harder, making it somewhat easier to do the work of pruning. Plus, because the branches are bare, it's easier to see and handle them during the pruning process. Disease Identification Any type of disease a tree may have will be easier to spot and treat during the winter time when the tree is bare. Healing Process By cutting the branches on the tree at the end of winter, the tree can then release the energy it has stored for the fall to heal these areas. Natural Tree Form In winter with the dormancy, the tree can be returned to a more natural form as the pruning helps to better shape the tree's look. Pruning Tips If you are going to prune your own trees, here are some tips we use in our commercial landscaping and maintenance business: Wait until the coldest part of winter has passed. This is because some trees have sap like maple, walnut, and birch, and will bleed that out if pruned then. While it's not harmful to the tree sap to bleed, it may be better to just wait until the coldest temperatures are done for the seasons. Start by removing dead, damaged, and diseased branches, which will help prevent insect and decay organisms from damaging the tree. Look for crossing branches to remove as this could cause further damage to the tree as they rub together. Remove any co-dominant leader branches, which are two branches that are growing near the top of the tree. By cutting off one of these, the other becomes dominant while other branches are not at risk from splitting or tearing during a windy period. If there is a dense canopy, thin this out so the tree can access more air and sunlight to reduce the risk of disease problems. Remove suckers and water sprouts because doing so can provide more food and water for the tree. Also, remove narrow crotches, which appear as a tree ages. Doing so can eliminate other tree damage. If you are not ready to tackle winter tree pruning, then contact us today so we can take care of it for you!
