Frequently Asked Questions and Answers about Irrigation Installation Q: How will I benefit from an in-ground sprinkler system? A: Since hand watering is done on a random basis, and at irregular intervals, an automatic sprinkler system will actually, in most cases, use less water. It will also disperse the water at an even rate, and for a predetermined amount of time. This allows you to water sunny and shady areas for different periods of time, and to water when it is most efficient. One obvious benefit is the ability to continue a watering program while you are away on vacation, etc. Q: How long does a system take to put in? A: It would depend on the area that is trying to be covered. An average size lawn (@15,000 sq. ft.) can usually be done in one full day, depending on the situation. A large country lawn can take anywhere from two to four days. On average, we spend one to two days on a job. Q: What is a back flow device, and why do I need one on my sprinkler system? A: A back flow device is generally a brass assembly that will prevent any water from the sprinkler system from getting into the drinking water supply, and are required by all municipalities. There are many different types of these, and each individual municipality has differing requirements for the installation. Q: What type of maintenance does the system require? A: All systems need to be winterized at the end of the season. This is done by attaching an air hose to a fitting on the water line, and blowing all of the water out of the system. Most people that we install systems for simply turn it back on in the springtime themselves. We do offer the service of opening systems for the season. The quality of the products used initially, and of the overall installation, play an important part in the long [...]

Beautiful Multi Terrain Landscaped Cemetery Lands Little Rock Landscaping Little Rock Arkansas is a beautiful city. With its rolling hills and river it is breathtaking. For a landscaper it can be a challenge and it takes the expertise of qualified and skilled landscaping company like Pugh's Earthworks to properly address the terrain variations. When landscaping slopes and hillsides there are several things landscapers must keep in mind. Trying to walk on slopes and can be difficult so careful planning to ensure a safe walk way is important. Then with hillsides there is always the potential hazard of soil runoff. Barriers have to be constructed so the soil remains intact. Keeping valuable nutrients from washing away with the runoff is critical. Properly landscaped, hillsides can be spectacular. Advantages to a hill is that you have a better view to visualize and create a perfect combination of plants, flowers and erosion preventing materials. Sometimes it is evident that additional topsoil will be needed if the hill is mostly rocks. Planting the proper flowers and shrubs in the available pockets will render a spectacular landscaped area. In addition to the variation of flowers and plants, stone walls are also a wonderful addition to a hilly landscape. Not only are they attractive but they are extremely functional with offering several benefits. In addition to helping to retain the soil and the nutrients, the stone can create its own micro-climate. This is because stone heats up from the sun and tends to retain that heat during the night. This often allows plants to grow in that area when they would not grow in other surrounding areas. Having a building that is situated on a hill can be stunning to the viewer.  The addition of stairways, paths and the proper combination of shrubs, flowers and plants can add so much beauty and property value. Choosing tough plants that will not require routine trimming is important. Therefore often evergreens are a great [...]

Why Your Landscape May Need Renovation

Landscape maintenance is one thing, but your landscape may actually be in need of renovation. While landscape maintenance can help an area look tidier and trim, there are times when it may need more than mowing or weed removal. Maintenance involves mowing, fertilizing, pest control, pruning, trimming and weeding. Over time, though, that will not be enough as lawns, trees, and plants begin to grow quickly and crowd each other. Because it's constantly changing, you can't just maintain a landscape. You need to undertake landscape renovation. Now, it's time to think about restoring and revitalizing your lawn and flower beds.  This includes replacing, removing and upgrading plants for the season or providing a new look and feel to your commercial landscape.  Also, trees may have grown so much that their crowns need to be thinned or they are impacting concrete and parking lots so need to be removed.   Remulching also falls under landscape renovation to provide a nice appearance and good coverage against any weeds. Turf most definitely must undergo regular renovation. This is because lawns can become compacted so they need aeration and seeding. Other reasons for landscape renovation may be due to the need to create a more environmentally friendly landscape that uses little to no water. Upcoming special events or a new remodel to your commercial business may also signal the need for landscape renovation. Finally, Mother Nature also has a way of reminding us that there is a need for commercial landscape renovation. For example, storms, snow, ice, and flooding may require landscape cleanup and restoration. Be sure to plan out what you want to renovate with your commercial landscape before ripping everything out. Similar to home renovations, it costs less and goes smoothly when you plan everything in advance. Have a budget in mind to also ensure you make the financial decisions that are right for your business. Consider working with a professional commercial landscape company that has the knowledge, skill set, and experience to provide direction and guidance on what works for your commercial property and business budget. Contact us today to get an estimate on your commercial landscaping renovation project.

Gardens and lawns contribute to better health, improve the aesthetics of cities and businesses, and provide an overall attractive look to everything around us to enhance moods. This celebration was started by the National Garden Bureau who worked with 23 national horticultural organizations to legislate National Garden Week. Former President Reagan signed the Proclamation on April 18, 1986. National Garden Week was first celebrated April 12 to 18, 1987. Changing Your Commercial Landscape To Fit Each Season

Every season brings different weather conditions that impact your commercial landscape. That's why it makes sense to regularly adjust your commercial landscape to fit the season. This creates a year-round beautiful and welcoming look to your commercial landscape. Here's what you can do to make sure your commercial landscape fits each season: Your first plan is to have an overall year-round commercial landscape and planning strategy that involves selecting trees and shrubs that you can prepare to replace the following season. That way, there will always be a focal point to your commercial landscape design. Since spring is the next season coming up, let's start there. After a drab, cold winter, you will want to show some color in your commercial landscape. Look for the earliest-blooming shrubs, trees, and flowers to get ready to plant. You'll most likely start enjoying various colors by mid-spring. And, to carry on your staggered planting strategy, summer should consist of trees and shrubs that are heartier and can withstand the heat and humidity of the season. From there, fall offers a lot of opportunity for colorful foliage and deep colors across shrubs and trees. When winter arrives again, most of the plants and trees will go into hibernation, so be prepared to focus on colors like white, brown, and gray for a few months with the exception of the seasonal evergreen tree. Then, there is your year-round commercial lawn care to consider. This area of your landscape should also have a strategy to keep it inviting throughout each season. With spring nearly here, it's time to sharpen those lawnmower blades and clean up all the debris. Keep an eye out for weeds and begin fertilizing. From there, each season will involve trimming, watering, and feeding until the lawn goes dormant again in winter. And, if you need expert and professional help making your commercial landscape fit with the season, then you should contact us today to learn more about our commercial landscaping design and maintenance packages.

How to Create a Beautiful Commercial Landscape For Your Business

The right commercial landscape for your business takes a solid plan and the knowledge of what defines good design. Before you start, here are some things to consider, especially around the idea of how the commercial landscape can enhance the look and image of your business, creating a welcoming element and projecting the benefits of working with you. This thoughtful planning should also take into account how you want people interacting with your property. Here are some other critical aspects of commercial design where it may be ideal to partner with an experienced commercial landscape company: Your business and landscape elements should align. If you are focused on sustainability, then your landscape will reflect that. Or, if you are fun want a playful look, then you will add fountains or other interactive features. A commercial landscape company can help shape how you align these. You want to welcome people and make it easy for them to get to you and even stay awhile. This includes landscape features like walkways, benches, tables and chairs, and low walls. Even hospitality areas with fire pits create an inviting atmosphere. This also helps direct the flow of traffic straight to your door, including paths lined with plants, trees, shrubs, flowers, and/or lights. Make the architecture where your business is located stand out more. You can add color and texture through the plants, trees, and flowers you select as well as use green walls and other features that tie the entire building and landscape together. In this day and age, conservation has become critical and an important factor when planning commercial landscape design. Look for ways to conserve water and energy through your design, including ways to create shade to reduce heating costs in your building. Think long term before planning out your commercial landscape design because how it looks when plants and trees have matured will be vastly different than when you first createe it. Also, consider the maintenance that goes into that landscape design. Both will be factors that involve time and money for your business. Contact us today so we can meet and determine how to create a beautiful, cost-effective commercial landscape design that fits your business, brand, and budget.

Why Winter is a Good Time to Plant Trees and Shrubs

A hard freeze triggers plants into dormancy for the winter. This makes it the safest time to plant and transplant things like trees and shrubs. That way, they can be settled in and ready to start growing and making leaves in the springtime. Also, plants store energy during the growing season so they can provide energy during the fall and winter seasons that help them grow roots. Plants undertake most of this root growth during the “dormant” season. That is one of the biggest reasons why it makes sense to plant trees and shrubs during the winter season. However, there are other reasons that make it an ideal time, too. Stress levels are reduced because of the lack of foliage and soft new growth. This means less water is used to keep the trees and shrubs happy. Pruning will also not need to be done. To be successful with winter tree and shrub planting, there are a few tips to follow. First, mulching is important because it will help to maintain constant soil temperatures and keeps soil moisture at a constant level. Second, use less fertilizer and use organic fertilizer so it doesn't burn the roots. It is specifically designed to promote root growth while not encouraging foliage growth. Third, if you live in a windy area, consider staking the trees to prevent undue stress on the new roots.   If the ground is frozen solid and unworkable, then you can store unplanted shrubs and trees in a sheltered spot with southern exposure. When growth starts in early spring, prune any damaged branches, and feed with a balanced organic fertilizer. Or, consider using a commercial landscape design and management company like Pugh's Earthworks who can handle all your commercial planting and management no matter what the season. Contact us now to find out how we can help you with all your landscape and planting needs.
