Pugh's Team Pugh's Earthworks Team No matter what industry you are in, medical, legal, banking, education, landscaping etc., looking the part is important. The professionals at Pugh's Earthworks realize that doing a great job at landscape design and seasonal maintenance is critical to set us apart from the competition. However, we also realize that showing up on the job site in torn jeans or dirty t shirts is not acceptable. We are in the commercial landscaping business and our job sites are at numerous businesses that must present a professional image to their clients. The Pugh's Earthworks team wears appropriate landscaping attire that presents well and also proudly displays our name. Not just our employees look the part but we take pride in our trucks and our equipment. Mowers have sharpened blades, trucks are clean and trimming equipment is well maintained. An excerpt from the Landscaping Magazine also speaks to the importance of dressing for the part: Bill Smith, a branch manager at Grassmaster Plus in Massachusetts, acknowledges landscaping is a dirty job. They provide their employees six T-shirts on rotation, so they have a clean shirt to wear each day they work, while giving them the opportunity to wash the clothes on Sundays. In total, it costs them about $2,000 annually. “You open up your closet and you see your work stuff and the stuff you’re going to wear on the weekend. Why can’t we intersect the two things and be really proud of (your company)?” Joseph Stark, [...]

Every job we do is backed by our 100% customer satisfaction guarantee. January is a great month to use the services of Pugh's Earthworks to prepare for the growing season! January Landscaping January is one of the coldest months of the year and landscaping is not always top of mind. However, there is much that can be done during this cold winter time to prepare for spring and a productive growing season. Pugh's Earthworks understands this and focuses on the things that help to keep them a top performing landscaping firm. This knowledge comes from being in the industry for over 25 years and the continual learning through landscape certification programs and trade publications. Some of the important landscaping actions to take in January are below: Tool Maintenance - Sharp blades on mowing equipment is key to a more beautiful and healthy lawn. The Pugh's Earthworks landscaping technicians work on the mowers to make sure blades are sharpened or replaced if needed. In addition, time is spent making sure all landscaping tools are cleaned and lubricated. Tools include not just mowers but also, pruners, loppers, leaf blowers and weed eaters. Dirt left on tools can eventually lead to spreading soil diseases to the landscape and also cause deterioration of the tools. Pruning - Not something that is always commonly considered is pruning shrubs and trees during the winter months. However, this is actually a good time as the plants and trees are in dormancy. This action makes the plants healthier plus it can be a time saver when Spring finally arrives. Also, for those that live in parts of the country that receive heavy snowfall, brushing the snow off of the branches prior to it freezing can protect the plants from breakage or permanent disfiguration of the shrub or tree. Fertilize - January is a good time to put down food for the lawn as well as herbicide for weed and disease prevention. This is also a good time to place fertilizer around the drip line of trees. They need fuel just like the grass and proper [...]

Tennessee Department of Agriculture Charter and License The license examination fee is $150, and application must be made by the 10th of the month that precedes the month of exam. License applicants must be commercially certified prior to the examination date. Applicants, with the exception of the AGE category, must qualify for the examination by one of three ways: have two years verifiable experience working under a licensee in that category, or have a four-year college degree with major studies in a related field, or hold a similar license in another state. License examinations are only offered in Nashville in the months of January, April, July, and October. The examination consists of two parts, the first in a multiple-choice written format. The second part involves specimen identification. A score of 70 percent is considered passing for each part. Failure on either part requires reexamination on both parts. Test results are made available on the same day at the testing site, and examinants with a passing score can apply for a license immediately. A pro-rated fee is required of $20 per license category per year. Licensees are held accountable for all pesticide applications and required pesticide recordkeeping. Licensees are expected to work full-time at the chartered firm, but are not required to be on-site at each application. However, at least one commercially certified person is required to be on site at each application. Pugh's Earthworks works closely with their customers every step of the landscape design process!   Pugh's Earthworks offers a series of Q&A on their website. Interesting and good questions are often posted by prospects and customers. Like the one below where a customer asks about the process of the landscape design process. The folks at Pugh's Earthworks have the training, knowledge and dedication to help commercial and residential clients every step of the landscape design process. Our team will not stop the process until our customers are 100% delighted with the outcome. Q: After I have decided upon the landscape rooms of my design, what are my next steps in the design process? A: Now that you have thought about your property in terms of rooms and established some priorities, it’s time to walk around your property and inventory and evaluate it. Doing so will help you objectively consider its positive aspects and limitations. There may be some things that are not possible once the property (site) is inventoried, while new possibilities may emerge. In any case, your design priorities must fit the site, or you will have problems. For example, planting a rose garden (a priority) in a shaded site (site inventory) will quickly lead to decline in rose quality. A decision needs to be made; modify the planting and install shade-loving plants in that area, or modify the site by removing trees and/or thinning out tree branches to improve sunlight for the roses. Begin by making a scaled drawing of your property; this is the “base plan.” Include property lines, house, garage, other structures, driveway, and sidewalks on this plan. Doing some research it was revealing to see just how much planing and thought goes into such a massive job. Not only for the initial plan design to optimize the aesthetic view of the property but equally important is the ongoing maintenance required to maintain that beauty. Below are some of the key considerations for Institutional landscape design and maintenance: Entrance - We all know that first impressions are critical. The same holds true when someone walks up to an Office building for the first time.  Not only should the entrance be inviting for quests but it should also be a place the employees are proud of. The technicians at Pugh's Earthworks will know which plants and flowers will compliment the building and also which are native to the region. Enhanced Signage - Companies spend large marketing dollars to design signage they feel best represents the company and will attract prospective customers. Naturally the owners do not want landscapes that obstruct the view of the sign. Instead a well trained landscaper will add flowers and plants that compliment the signage and bring more attention to it. Outdoor Seating/Common Area - Everyone enjoys a nice place to take a break from work. Phone calls, emails, meetings and deadlines can weigh on you. Offices that have taken the extra step in creating an outdoor oasis for their employees will reap the benefits of [...]
