At Pugh's Earthworks, we have numerous credentials held by our talented team of certified landscape technicians. One such credential and field of study is in Agronomy. Agronomy is the inclusive science and technology of growing plants and land restoration. Originally this science was focused mostly on the agricultural aspect of plants as food and fuel source. Over the years it has evolved and is much more inclusive of all areas of plants and the environment. When a person studied the field of Agronomy they will be exposed to plant genetics, plant physiology, soil science and even meteorology. One area that is important in any plant growing endeavor is soil science. Knowing how to analyze soil content is vital to the selection and continued fertilization of plants and grasses. Soil contains two basic types of nutrients. Those like in economics are macro and micro. Macronutrients found in different soil regions are things like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulfur. Micronutrients are zinc and boron. Another important and obvious responsibility of an agronomist and a landscape technician is soil conservation. Our planet has amazing resources but they have to be protected. Over time soil can be damaged and eroded by wind and water. Professionals in the landscaping field as well as agricultural have to be thoughtful in their planning in order to preserve the integrity of the soil in which plants are growing. For future generations to come, things like disposal of pesticide buildup and water pollution have to be managed properly. In summary, when [...]

Autumn Garden Fall Grasses and Landscaping Preparation Soon the weather will be cooling down and fall be here. Our certified landscape technicians can help you start preparations to keep your fall grass and landscape in healthy condition. Some helpful tips are below. Cool-season grasses -  These grasses should be fertilized primarily in late Summer and Fall (September and October). Nutrients applied at this time encourage root growth and turf thickening. Fall applications also result in early spring green-up without causing excessive leafy top growth. Given proper fall fertilization, spring applications may not be required. High rates of nitrogen (more than 1 pound per 1,000 square feet) in the spring will stimulate unnecessary flushes of leaf growth and may predispose the lawn to greater summer damage. No more than one spring fertilization should occur. This can be in late Match or early April with a weed-and-feed treatment for crabgrass or in May with a slow-release nitrogen source. Keep mowing - Grass continues to grow until the first freeze or frost at which time it in then goes dormant for the winter. For that reason you should continue to mow until it stops growing. Water -  So the cooler temperatures create less water evaporation. This means you need to be using a more reserved amount of water. A good rule of thumb is to supplement watering the yard so that it is getting one inch of water per week. Frequent Raking - Soon leaves with be falling. It is important to rake the leaves and remove them from the grass. They can block out the sunlight and if left on the lawn for too long can lead to fungal diseases. Aeration -  This is not always a top of mind procedure however it is one that is very beneficial to your lawn. The summer heat drys out the soil and it typically gets very compacted. When you do professional Aeration, this process breaks up the soil [...]

Helps you become an eco-friendly business You may not know how to change your landscape so it uses less water or takes advantage of eco-friendly practices. That's when it makes sense to leave it to the commercial landscape professional who understands how to use native plants and design an eco-friendly landscape that contributes to the environment rather than takes away precious natural resources. 3. Plus, will be inspired and motivated by the attractive landscape to get more done. Working with a commercial  landscape design professional, you can also add things like a patio and outdoor seating to encourage employees to go outside and enjoy their breaks, so they come back refreshed and ready to work. They may even enjoy working outside when weather permits and get more done by doing so. 4. Raises commercial property value. Similar to a residential property, the more attractive your commercial property is the more valuable it becomes should you go to sell it, lease it, or take out a loan. A commercial landscape company can help you add features like lighting, hardscape, and other features that do the most to raise value. 5. Attracts more customers.  A professional commercial landscaping company can help you attract more customers that are drawn to your business just from the inviting fountain, lighting, seating, and array of flowers, greenery, and even lawn.
