First impressions as they say are important. Commercial Property Owners want customers and employees to get the impression that the property is well maintained. The Summer season is wonderful. However, it seems to be a season when lawns are vulnerable to the introduction of destructive weeds.  Pugh's Earthworks will apply preemergent during the Spring to prevent the germination of all varieties of weeds. Even with this valuable preventive measure, weeds still find a way to reenter the lawn. This is why having an experienced Commercial Landscaping Company can make the difference in the appearance of the property year-round. There are numerous varieties of harmful weeds. Below are few of the most common. Crabgrass and Nutsedge - These are grassy type weeds. They tend to blend in better to the normal grass which is their secret to eventually dominating the lawn. A good technique that Pugh's Earthworks may employ is to aerate, water and fertilize the property in the proper quantities and application. This method tends to help the health of the grass you want to grow, and it can eventually overtake and smother out the crabgrass. Broadleaf Weeds - There are several types of broadleaf weeds. They tend to stand out more and truly make any lawn appear unkept. They can also be difficult to eradicate. Some of the more common types of broadleaf weeds are Knotweed Spurge, Dandelion, Ground Ivy, and White Clover.  There is no mistaking these unsightly plants with their large leaves and often flowers. They clearly to not belong in the commercial landscape. Treating broadleaf weeds can be more difficult. Sometimes if there is not a tremendous infestation you may be able to pull them by hand. Often times it requires the expertise of a trained landscape technician to come in with the proper herbicide and post-emergent control procedures. Handling of these chemicals can be hazardous and not effective if not used properly. That is where the Pugh's Earthworks professionals are experienced and are the best solution for complete Weed Control.     Pugh's Earthworks Weed Control Services The headquarters for Pugh's Earthworks is in Memphis, Tennessee. Tennessee Department of Agriculture Chartered/Licensed Mississippi Bureau of Plant Industry licensed Arkansas State Plant Board Licensed Landscape Industry Certified Below is a partial excerpt of EPA comments found on the Tennessee Department of Agriculture website. Clearly there are many factors to consider when applying chemicals. "The ESA is intended to protect and promote the recovery of species that are in danger of becoming extinct. Threats to a species from habitat destruction, pollution, over-harvesting, disease, predation and other natural or man-made factors must be reviewed and evaluated before an animal or plant can be placed on the federal endangered or threatened species list. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service, collectively known as the Services, administer the ESA. However, the ESA requires that all federal agencies, including EPA, make sure that any action they authorize, fund or carry out won’t jeopardize the existence of listed species or “destroy or adversely modify” any designated critical habitat for that species. The role EPA has in implementing the ESA is to ensure that the use of pesticides is not likely to jeopardize listed species or destroy or adversely modify their critical habitat when we register pesticides. When EPA determines that use limitations are necessary to ensure that legal use of a pesticide will not harm listed species or their critical habitat, we may seek to change the terms of the pesticide application to establish either generic or geographically specific pesticide use limitations. When geographically specific use limitations are necessary, Bulletins are developed to put the necessary mitigations into place. These mitigations are specific to the area(s) where the species is exposed to the pesticide(s) in question. Pesticide labels refer the pesticide user to Bulletins Live! Two contains enforceable use limitations for a pesticide to ensure its use will not jeopardize the continued existence of a listed species or adversely modify designated critical habitat. Bulletins show: The name of the pesticide active ingredient(s) and/or product(s), depending on what the user searches for, with pesticide limitations that may affect the listed species, The geographically specific pesticide use limitation(s) necessary to protect listed species or designated critical [...]

Spring is the Time For Pre-Emergent For Weed Control

The best approach to controlling weeds throughout your commercial landscaping is to stop them from even showing up. First, it's important to know about the weeds you are trying to control. There are perennial weeds that survive and reproduce even in adverse conditions like even through winter weather. Then, there are annual weeds that can’t survive underground but some emerge at times of the year when preemergent weed killers aren’t active. Next, it's good to have a weed control strategy as part of your landscape maintenance program that incorporates pre-emergent weed control. These products should be used before a plant germinates in early spring. For difficult annual weeds, you may need to do multiple applications, including at the start of the spring and then at timed intervals throughout the season. This is because pre-emergent weed killers don't destroy weeds and their seeds. What they do is stop the weeds and their seeds from growing. For the first treatment of pre-emergent, the middle of March is highly recommended just when the spring season is about to start. This tends to get the weeds that most commonly start to appear as the average soil temperatures go above 50 degrees. Major summer weeds include crabgrass or clover, so it's important to use a pre-emergent treatment to stop them. Often, it can seem time-consuming to handle all these weed control treatments at your commercial property. Plus, you might be worried about visitors coming into contact with the pre-emergent treatments for weeds. That's why you can leave the weed control work to us by contacting us now to find out how we can add weed control to our monthly commercial landscaping maintenance services.

Weed Control: Put Down Pre-Emergent in the Spring

Weeds seem to appear everywhere, especially after winter and spring rains. They get in the way of your lawn and garden plants and flowers getting the nutrition and water they need. That's why they must go. Spring is a good time to get those weeds under control as part of your lawn maintenance. There are many ways you can do this, but applying a pre-emergent herbicide is one of the most effective weed control strategies. Here's why: For our commercial lawn and garden services here in Memphis, we use high-quality pre-emergent herbicides to control broadleaf weeds and crabgrass that start to infringe on turf, landscaping, agricultural lands, golf courses and other areas.  Pre-emergent herbicides weed killers are perfect for spring and fall application. Pre-emergent herbicides are typically applied in the early growing season, which is the springtime. This helps prevent the weed seeds from germinating and becoming full-grown weeds. The pre-emergent herbicide weed control forms a barrier around a weed seed. This makes it nearly impossible for the wee seed to sprout so then it's less likely to grow. Pre-emergent herbicides can be applied a few different ways. You can utilize a granular spreader or a pressurized handheld sprayer. Liquid herbicides are often concentrated solutions that have to be mixed with water first. Granular herbicides can be spread and require irrigation to help the granule release the pre-emergent chemical.    To help make the pre-emergent work effectively, it's important to aerate the lawn and surrounding area first. Then, apply the weed control substance. This helps the pre-emergent get the seeds to do its work. Watering the pre-emergent also helps it to get into that topsoil layer where the weed seeds tend to germinate. Follow the instructions provided on each pre-emergent weed control solution you select. For all of our commercial clients, we take care of this part of lawn care and maintenance for you to ensure you have the healthiest lawn and garden possible. Contact us today to learn more.
