Pugh's Earthworks creates beautiful landscapes that can increase healing and well being!   Beautiful Hospital Landscaping Landscaping Health Benefits Beyond the obvious benefits of landscaping being aesthetically pleasing to the eye and helpful for the property value, there are studies showing that nicely landscaped hospital gardens have healing benefits for patients and staff. The calming effects of natural views can reduce stress and speed up the process of healing. A study conducted by a research team by the name of Cooper-Marcus and Barnes in the late 90's showed measurable benefits to both patients and staff. Their study showed that the hospital staff members were much happier and more productive when they had the ability to go outside and unwind. In addition, patients they interviewed said that the hospital gardens created a welcomed change from the stress of treatments and fear of illness. For decades it has been evident that the stresses endured by healthcare workers can be overwhelming. Extremely long hours, difficultly and fatigue caused by shift changes, lack of control or authority over decisions and emotional demands of the job have taken a toll. These conditions have in some cases lowered job satisfaction which has the domino effect of increasing absenteeism or turnover.  These consequences obviously have an effect on the care patients may receive. Studies have shown that hospital workers can find peace and tranquility by escaping to an outside hospital garden. This magnifies the need for landscaping expertise. Professional landscaping adds all of the necessary elements that make a garden one of splendor. Nature has a way of letting us escape to a world of calm and serenity. It is easy to recognize that a healthcare worked who is allowed the time to meditate and escape from a demanding profession can ultimately benefit those patients in their care. It also lowers the employment costs for hospitals as it takes time and money to train new employees. For the patients and their families, a beautifully designed and landscaped hospital garden has been shown to [...]

How to Create a Beautiful Commercial Landscape For Your Business

The right commercial landscape for your business takes a solid plan and the knowledge of what defines good design. Before you start, here are some things to consider, especially around the idea of how the commercial landscape can enhance the look and image of your business, creating a welcoming element and projecting the benefits of working with you. This thoughtful planning should also take into account how you want people interacting with your property. Here are some other critical aspects of commercial design where it may be ideal to partner with an experienced commercial landscape company: Your business and landscape elements should align. If you are focused on sustainability, then your landscape will reflect that. Or, if you are fun want a playful look, then you will add fountains or other interactive features. A commercial landscape company can help shape how you align these. You want to welcome people and make it easy for them to get to you and even stay awhile. This includes landscape features like walkways, benches, tables and chairs, and low walls. Even hospitality areas with fire pits create an inviting atmosphere. This also helps direct the flow of traffic straight to your door, including paths lined with plants, trees, shrubs, flowers, and/or lights. Make the architecture where your business is located stand out more. You can add color and texture through the plants, trees, and flowers you select as well as use green walls and other features that tie the entire building and landscape together. In this day and age, conservation has become critical and an important factor when planning commercial landscape design. Look for ways to conserve water and energy through your design, including ways to create shade to reduce heating costs in your building. Think long term before planning out your commercial landscape design because how it looks when plants and trees have matured will be vastly different than when you first createe it. Also, consider the maintenance that goes into that landscape design. Both will be factors that involve time and money for your business. Contact us today so we can meet and determine how to create a beautiful, cost-effective commercial landscape design that fits your business, brand, and budget.

Why Winter is a Good Time to Plant Trees and Shrubs

A hard freeze triggers plants into dormancy for the winter. This makes it the safest time to plant and transplant things like trees and shrubs. That way, they can be settled in and ready to start growing and making leaves in the springtime. Also, plants store energy during the growing season so they can provide energy during the fall and winter seasons that help them grow roots. Plants undertake most of this root growth during the “dormant” season. That is one of the biggest reasons why it makes sense to plant trees and shrubs during the winter season. However, there are other reasons that make it an ideal time, too. Stress levels are reduced because of the lack of foliage and soft new growth. This means less water is used to keep the trees and shrubs happy. Pruning will also not need to be done. To be successful with winter tree and shrub planting, there are a few tips to follow. First, mulching is important because it will help to maintain constant soil temperatures and keeps soil moisture at a constant level. Second, use less fertilizer and use organic fertilizer so it doesn't burn the roots. It is specifically designed to promote root growth while not encouraging foliage growth. Third, if you live in a windy area, consider staking the trees to prevent undue stress on the new roots.   If the ground is frozen solid and unworkable, then you can store unplanted shrubs and trees in a sheltered spot with southern exposure. When growth starts in early spring, prune any damaged branches, and feed with a balanced organic fertilizer. Or, consider using a commercial landscape design and management company like Pugh's Earthworks who can handle all your commercial planting and management no matter what the season. Contact us now to find out how we can help you with all your landscape and planting needs.

First Impressions Count: Add Attractive Landscaping to the Front of Your Business

An unattractive entrance to your business is not inviting to potential new clients. It may send the message that your business is not concerned with the details, which prospects may think will then apply to them. Instead, they would rather work with a company that takes pride in itself. That first impression counts. Here are the basics of what defines good commercial landscape design: Gain Customer’s Interest Your commercial landscape should add interest and encourage them to stay awhile. For example, consider adding things like benches, picnic tables, and water features. Direct Traffic Flow You don't want your customers or prospects to be confused about where to enter your business. You can use landscaping to direct traffic flow right to your front door. Use decorative concrete lined by plants or flowers to lead the way. Accent Architecture Make sure the landscape fits your building's style. This will highlight architectural features and blend the natural with the structure in an aesthetic way. Convey the Right Message Your business and your building have a brand so your landscape should reflect that. Is that message about sustainability, fun, professionalism, or forward thinking?  This may mean dancing water features for fun or native grasses and wildflowers for sustainability-focused buildings. Conserve Water and Energy Now, more than ever, conservation is a critical part of commercial landscape design. You also want to present yourself as a socially conscious, environmentally friendly business. The landscape can provide shade to the building. If possible, you can also consider adding a "green" roof or roof-top garden, which can lower heating and cooling costs. Think About the Future When thinking about commercial landscape design, consider how it might landscape as it matures. This is important when deciding where to place trees and shrubs, which will change scale over time. Also, think about the type of maintenance that your commercial landscape design will require, weighing the cost and time needed to keep it looking beautiful. Work with a Professional Commercial Landscape Company Chose Pugh's Earthworks to carefully sculpt your landscape. They can select the best plants and have expert designers that make good use of space, accommodating the look of your company's building and surrounding area. Contact us today!

Time to Change Out Those Flower Beds

Flower beds provide a beautiful and eye-catching feature to any commercial or residential garden. With a burst of color, these beautiful floral displays can provide enjoyment the entire year round. However, flowers tend to provide that beauty on a seasonal basis. That means that, at certain points in the year, it's time to change those flowers out for others that are in-season. At this time of year, it means going with flowers that flourish in hotter temperatures. Here's how to re-do a flower bed. The first step is to clean out the existing flower bed.  Remove old perennials, weeds, and any debris. Think of it as a clean slate so you can start again with seasonal blooms. This may be a good time to change the shape of your flower bed. Rather than going with that traditional rectangular look, why not add some curves to it by drawing out new lines with the soil? Now, it's time to add new soil to your flower bed. Dig up rocks, roots, and any debris before putting a layer of garden-specific soil. It should be about six inches deep. You can also add compost and leaf mold. This will boost soil nutrition. Let your flower bed settle for 30 to 60 days before planting. Work with your local garden center on the ideal flowers for this time of year. Once you have an idea of what works, then you can select the colors and varieties to use that will fit your space and garden style. This is where you can be creative. As you plant the flowers in the bed, be sure to add enough water to make puddles under each flower. Add a thin layer of mulch. This will help prevent weeds and allow the soil to retain moisture even during the hot summer ahead. Of course, if you don't have the time to re-do your commercial flower beds, consider turning to professionals like Pugh's Earthworks. Contact us today!

How Important Is Curb Appeal

Ready to jazz up your curb appeal? Here is an easy 4-step plan: First, consider how the front of your business looks to passers-by. The façade of a building is the single most important factor determining its curb appeal. It’s the first impression that customers will see of your business. Attractive signage, uncluttered windows and fresh paint can go a long way in presenting your business at its best. Next, consider your signage. It should be in plain view and easy to read. It should also be made out of quality materials. Remember the old saying “you get what you pay for” and avoid cheap-looking material. Choose a sign that complements the business district that you’re located in. If you’re in a shopping center your sign should match the size, style and material of the other businesses in the center. And remember to check with your local permit office to learn if you need a sign permit. Take a look at your parking area. You’ll want ample, convenient parking on a paved lot with clear markings. Lots should be well-maintained; potholes should be fixed and faded lines should be repainted. If you’re located in an urban area with lots of asphalt and no trees, consider adding tree islands and evergreen shrubs. This can make a huge impact on your curb appeal while at the same time improving the environment. Remove grass that invariably grows in cracks next to curbs and sidewalks as well as in parking lots. Finally, keep landscaping well-maintained and well-manicured. Updating your business landscaping with simple evergreen shrubs can have a huge impact at relatively low-cost. Consider adding color to your site with knock-out roses. They’re hardy in a southern climate and are being used more frequently in privately-owned commercial projects as well as publicly-owned street medians. If you have Crape Myrtle trees on your property keep the “suckers” – all the new shoots that occur around the base of Crape Myrtle trees – trimmed away. And don’t forget to keep the public sidewalk in front of your business free from weeds, tree limbs and other debris. The Bottom Line For better or worse, your business will be judged by its appearance. Fortunately, your business’ image is within your control. Consider these tips and implement those your business needs and contact Pugh's Earthworks to help with your landscaping needs.

Pugh’s Earthworks Preparing For A Great 2015

It’s that time of the year again where we all sit around and wonder where 2014 went. Soon our friends and family will visit and enjoy the holiday season with loved ones, but that’s a completely different story. I wanted to share with you my top five tips to tie a ribbon on this year and prepare for an even more successful 2015. Reflect on this year What went well? What did you do to prepare yourself for that success? Can it be replicated as you think about next year? What didn’t work? Why didn’t it work? What would you do differently if you had a chance? Clean out your email inbox How many emails are in your inbox, just sitting there, staring you in the face for days on end? Take the time to weed through those emails and don’t be afraid to discard them if they are no longer important. If they were vital to your success, most likely they would have been done by now or brought up again by the colleague that sent them to you. Set a personal goal for 2015 Is it to lose weight? Save money for a house? Get a puppy? Visit your best friend? Take a trip to the place you have always wanted to go? Go to Space Camp? Hire a new commercial landscaper? Doesn’t matter what it is, but if you want to achieve it you need to commit to it and set a path of progress to get there. Set a work goal for 2015 Open in a new market? Take on a large rebranding campaign? Or perhaps your goals are more career oriented, perhaps to get that next promotion? If so, you want to pay attention to these great tips and avoid these common mistakes. Reestablish Connections Reach out to someone in your business network that you haven’t spoken to in a long time, someone who has done something special for you over this past year or an old friend from your former job. Drop a line to a friend that overcame a personal challenge this year, somebody who left you a message a while ago that you just never got around to returning or just for no reason at all! It may seem like a lot to squeeze in at this busy time of the year, but I can guarantee you that it can be done with just a little conscious direction. Think of it as the gift that you can give yourself. Take the necessary couple of hours over the next couple of weeks to practice some of these tips. The gift of clear focus, direction and alignment will be one you can appreciate all through next year. Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year Everyone!
