Landscaping & Lawn Maintenance Should Be Considered Essential Services Pugh's Earthworks Customers & Others This May Concern: NALP is the national trade organization representing the $82 billion landscape industry in the United States. Member companies specialize in lawn care, landscape maintenance, tree care, irrigation, and water management. Landscape professionals work daily throughout the Nation servicing homes and businesses to maintain their landscapes, sustain the environment, and take pride in our communities by enhancing and maintaining healthy green spaces. As a Nation, we are all struggling to combat the rapid transmission of the coronavirus “COVID19,”and we understand and acknowledge that in some instances, drastic steps are being taken, including shutting down businesses deemed non-essential. We are communicating with you today to assure you that landscape services are essential services and must continue during any emergency declaration or quarantine scenario. Landscapers are partners during this critical time in assisting in the protection of public health and public safety. Without the landscape industry conducting these valuable services, we will undoubtedly see increased instances where people may be harmed or become sick from other illnesses compounding our already stretched medical resources. Recently, Counties in and around the greater San Francisco metropolitan area enacted a temporary “lockdown.” We anticipate other municipalities and states to take similar precautionary steps. The “lockdown” issued by these counties exempt “essential services,” pertinent for the landscape industry is the below portion of the exemption: ix. Plumbers, electricians, exterminators, and other service providers who provide services that are necessary to maintaining the safety, sanitation, and essential operation of residences, Essential Activities, and Essential Businesses For the foregoing reasons, landscape services should be deemed “essential.” Landscapers are protectors of public health performing essential treatments to lawns and green spaces to reduce the transmission of dangerous and deadly diseases through pests like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas. Landscapers protect property and maintain greenspaces that could otherwise jeopardize public safety. Unkept fields and green spaces increase the chance of injuries. Tree removal is also a critical function of our industry to avoid damaging homes and their families. Landscapers play a critical role in boosting morale and mental health during a difficult time for our Nation. Without landscape services fields, parks, businesses, and homes will become overgrown and unkept, which can have dramatic psychological effects on the mental and well being of our communities. Spring is a critical time of year for our industry due to the abundance of growth in the spring that requires prompt maintenance and care. Knowing when to fertilize during the late summer and early fall period can depend on a variety of factors. One of the most important factors is the type of grass you have on your lawn. It's also based on what type of weather conditions you have. experience. Fertilizing your lawn when it is not expecting it can be problems for your lawn.  Based on years of experience, here are some tips on when and how to fertilize your lawn. Why you should fertilize in the late summer or early fall By late August and early September, your lawn really needs some help recovering from the heat and minimal water. That's why nitrogen-based fertilizer can really help the grass recover and promote new grass growth before the fall. Caring for cool-season grass and warm-season grass Warm and cool-season grasses need to be fertilized differently. For warm-season grasses, your lawn needs a more robust amount supplied during the late summer months. This works for lawns with Bermuda grass or St. Augustine grass. If you have cool-season grasses, including varieties like bluegrass or fescue, you need to postpone fertilizing until late fall around October or November. At this point, use a phosphorous-based fertilizer to help get it ready for winter. Tips for fertilizing your summer and fall lawns Before fertilizing, there are steps you need to take to make sure you optimize the results. First, don't fertilize if you are still in a drought. Make sure the lawn is fully watered or the fertilizer will burn the existing lawn. Don't forget to fertilize the edges of the lawn and focus on even distribution of the fertilizer across your lawn by moving slowly across it. Finally, don't over-fertilize because the grass will grow too quickly. If you need assistance, contact us today to let a professional handle all your commercial lawn maintenance needs. We can also take care of any pest control issues you may be experiencing!

Why is Compost Good For Lawns?

You may have heard of compost, and it brings to mind what people can do with some of their food waste. That's because compost is essentially decomposed organic matter that includes some of that food waste you throw away. It's that compost and what it is made of that helps nourish the soil and feeds those plants or that lawn. Compost can be made on a small scale like what people do with the organic aspects of their trash. It's typically made in a large container. Or, it can be created on a much larger scale. Besides food, compost can also include grass clippings, leaves, hay, seashells, tree bark and twigs, animal manure, and straw. The compost mixture typically consists of two parts of dry material like leaves to one part wet or green material, such as grass clippings. The mixture is then left to decompose. Air movement is important, but the decomposing compost must also remain evenly moist. What makes compost so good for the lawn and other landscape is the microorganisms. Millions of microbes deliver the necessary nutrients to the soil to help stimulate plant growth. With all the nutrients, the grass becomes healthier. Just think of it as vitamins for the grass. To apply compost to a lawn, it needs to be spread with shovels to create a layer across the lawn that is about 1/4" thick. After a rake can be used to ensure the compost is evenly spread. It is good to apply the compost just after seeding and aerating. Because microorganisms are continually reproducing and dying, you can never add too much compost to the lawn. Once organic matter starts to build up in the soil, you can apply compost much less.  Also, you won't need to fertilize and water the lawn while weed, insect, and disease will also decrease. This illustrates another benefit of using compost for the lawn. To get professional assistance with composting, contact us now to find out how we can help you maintain a lush commercial lawn.

April is Lawn and Garden Month

Every April, communities, businesses, and individuals across the celebrate gardening during National Garden and Lawn Month.  It brings awareness to the beauty found in nature as well as the benefits gardening provides all of us. Gardens and lawns contribute to better health, improve the aesthetics of cities and businesses, and provide an overall attractive look to everything around us to enhance moods. This celebration was started by the National Garden Bureau who worked with 23 national horticultural organizations to legislate National Garden Week. Former President Reagan signed the Proclamation on April 18, 1986. National Garden Week was first celebrated April 12 to 18, 1987. Then, in 2002, the National Gardening Association decided to extend the celebration to encompass the entire month of April. From 2003, National Garden Month has been celebrated during the month of April. Here are some ways to celebrate the month: Participate in a city or neighborhood beautification day. Spring is the Time For Pre-Emergent For Weed Control

The best approach to controlling weeds throughout your commercial landscaping is to stop them from even showing up. First, it's important to know about the weeds you are trying to control. There are perennial weeds that survive and reproduce even in adverse conditions like even through winter weather. Then, there are annual weeds that can’t survive underground but some emerge at times of the year when preemergent weed killers aren’t active. Next, it's good to have a weed control strategy as part of your landscape maintenance program that incorporates pre-emergent weed control. These products should be used before a plant germinates in early spring. For difficult annual weeds, you may need to do multiple applications, including at the start of the spring and then at timed intervals throughout the season. This is because pre-emergent weed killers don't destroy weeds and their seeds. What they do is stop the weeds and their seeds from growing. For the first treatment of pre-emergent, the middle of March is highly recommended just when the spring season is about to start. This tends to get the weeds that most commonly start to appear as the average soil temperatures go above 50 degrees. Major summer weeds include crabgrass or clover, so it's important to use a pre-emergent treatment to stop them. Often, it can seem time-consuming to handle all these weed control treatments at your commercial property. Plus, you might be worried about visitors coming into contact with the pre-emergent treatments for weeds. That's why you can leave the weed control work to us by contacting us now to find out how we can add weed control to our monthly commercial landscaping maintenance services.

Tips For Beautiful Retail Shopping Center Lawns and Landscape

The right landscape can make a retail shopping center feel more shoppable. That's why it's important to keep flower beds, hedges, trees, and lawns beautiful at these shopping malls and strip malls beautiful and welcoming the whole year round. It sets the mood and tells customers what the retailers feel about the customer experience. First, make sure you regularly update the look of the landscape. If trees have gotten too big after being there for decades, they might obstruct the view of the shopping center. Also, patrons want to see more environmentally sensitive landscaping so they know water is not being wasted. Second, look for ways to add ambiance through the landscaping, such as creating a natural screen with planters or hedges. These can be barriers between the road or parking lot and an outdoor patio that makes it more inviting to sit in that area. Third, consider how the landscaping works together and add plants and flowers that complement each other rather than create a confusing mix of greenery. Make the area more park-like and as an oasis where customers may want to stay longer and enjoy it. Maybe they will even continue shopping. Finally, consider the season so that you rotate seasonal flowers and plants, such as ornamental kale in the winter and chrysanthemums in the fall. Think of all the ways that you can add visual interest for visitors. We have helped numerous retail shopping centers maintain beautiful lawns and inviting landscapes. Contact us today to learn how we can help your retail space.
