They are members of the National Association of Landscape Professionals which was formerly know as the Professional Land Care Network (PLANET). The National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) is the culmination of the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) founded in 1961. The ALCA actually sponsored the NASA Clean Air Study. The results of this study were published in 1989. The ALCA formed the Foliage for Clean Air Council soon after but due to lack of funding it had to be discontinued. The ACLA did create the Certified Landscape Professional (CLP) credential. This credential is now know as the Landscape Industry Certified program. The Pugh's Earthworks team is able to take advance of the continuing education and reports on industry trends via their membership with the NALP. For example the NALP, due to Covid, is offering online classes. In early November members can learn about Construction Safety. This is an important topic for all landscape technicians in order to navigate the dangers inherent with working on landscape design sites. Students learn about hazard recognition, abatement and prevention. Whether or not you subscribe to the theory of Global Warming, it is an issue that is front and center. Doing some research I ran across a publication by the American Society of Landscape Architects. This group was founded in 1899 and is comprised of over 15,000 US landscape architects that are experts in their field. They describe their mission as "Landscape architects lead the planning, design, and stewardship of healthy, equitable, safe, and resilient environments. Stone Foot Path Pugh’s Earthworks Success Story The success story of Pugh's Earthworks is special. Through the trials and challenges of running a business which was a new concept for the Pugh's brothers, these three close brothers found a way to make it work. Today they run a premier landscaping company with five offices in three states. Their success captured the attention of Lawn and Landscape Magazine which is the leading B2B publication serving the $70 Billion landscaping and lawn care industry. The August 2017 edition of Lawn and Landscape Magazine featured Pugh’s Earthworks. The transition from brothers to business partners was not easy for the Pugh's. In fact, two of the brothers came to blows in a conference room, which eventually led to family counseling. When their father suddenly passed away, leaving behind several flower shops in Memphis, they had to learn how to work together – or they would fall apart. When Bill Pugh died in 1987, Mark, president and owner, was only 16, Tim, vice president and owner was 19 and Michael, chief financial officer was 22. The older Pugh's helped deliver flowers for years. But Mark’s busy sports schedule didn’t allow him to work regular hours, so he landscaped around the neighborhood. They had no idea they would end up owning their father’s business, spinning off several companies or expanding throughout the region. “I actually took a leave of absence from my job for a few months to help dad’s partner with some of dad’s responsibilities because I thought we were going to sell the business,” says Michael, who was managing a sporting goods store at the time.
