Pugh’s Earthworks Commercial Landscaping Water Conservation

Pugh's Earthworks has Big Company Strength and Small Company Values! Recently, I took a drive from Oklahoma to Georgia for a combination Business and Pleasure two week trip. As I drove, the hills, trees, lakes and rivers seemed to get more plentiful and beautiful. Culimanting by the time I got to Chattanoga TN, I was in a different world. Going through Littlerock AR, Memphis and Jackson TN, I paused for proud reflection on Pugh's Earthworks and the part they play in Commercial Landscaping Water Conservation. Then I thought about our fellow Americans out West where water supply reservoirs are at a cricitically low level and rationing is in place. Pugh's Earthworks is one of the Mid South’ s leading commercial landscape installation and maintenance companies. From its beginning, the company has continued its commitment to quality, integrity and superior service. The company provides the highest quality landscaping services and commercial grounds management for various commercial properties. Mark Pugh started the lawn business in 1992 in a $500 truck with his phone number on it. Just 21 years later Pugh’s Earthworks has developed markets including Jackson, Memphis and Nashville TN. Plus Littlerock AR and Southaven MS. Not only does Pugh's Earthworks focus on creating and maintaining amazing Commercial Property Landscapes for all customers, they also have a love for the environment. With this in mind, all chemical treatments for pesticides and fertizilzers are applied in compliance with industry safety standards. In addition, as landscapes are designed, things like soil errosion and water conservation are always top of mind. Pugh's is a member of the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP). Below is an article written by a member of that organization regarding water conservation efforts in CA. Earlier this year, the State Water Resources Control Board voted unanimously to implement a statewide ban on the watering of nonfunctional turf in the commercial, industrial and institutional sectors in California that runs for one year. The board also put regulations in place requiring local agencies to implement water use restrictions as water supplies may be up to 20 percent lower due to extreme drought. In a webinar hosted on June 6 by the California Landscape Contractors Association, the Irrigation Association, NALP and Maureen Erbeznik & Associates, Warren Gorowitz with Hunter Industries, Peter Estournes with Gardenworks Inc. and Maureen Erbeznik discussed the nature of the restrictions and the options available to landscape professionals. Erbeznik explains that nonfunctional turf refers to areas that are solely ornamental. If the turf is used for recreational purposes or community events, then it is considered functional. Exemptions to the ban include spaces that use non-potable water for irrigation or areas with trees. The ban does not apply to residential yards. Stay on Top of Local Regulations Local retail water agencies can expand regulations at their discretion to places like multi-family housing, golf courses, cemeteries and subsurface irrigation. With more than 400 water agencies in the state, the fluidity of restrictions and regulations will vary on each area’s water situation. [...]

Hire Pugh’s Earthworks to Maximize the Efficiency of Summer Watering

Pugh's Earthworks has Operations in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi Many parts of the country including the Mid-South, have had a very cool and wet May. However, it will not be long until the dry hot weather makes it critical to practice effective Summer Watering. Pugh's Earthworks is one of the largest commercial landscape design, installation and maintenance firms in the Mid-South area. Our clients include some of the premier office buildings, hotels, hospitals, churches and cemeteries in the cities we operate. In addition to the commercial customers we serve, we also provide landscape services for Homeowners Associations (HOAs), Condo Owners Associations (COA’s) and individual residential homeowners. A properly designed Commercial Landscape Sprinkler system, like the ones designed and installed by the Pugh's Earthworks Certified Landscape Technicians, will ensure that the lawn and plants on your property receive the exact amount of water during the summer. Protecting these plants is important as it is expensive to replace them. During the summer months, the hot weather and intense sunlight are tough for summer plants and lawns to take. That is why we often refresh both with extra water. However, there is still a need to water wisely during these hot months to be careful with water and get the maximum impact from your watering without wasting any of this precious resource. Below are some tips on how to water wisely to use less water as well as give your plants and lawn just the right amount: Water weekly: Pick one day a week to water your lawn and plants, preferably a time in the morning or evening where the sun and heat won't evaporate it too quickly. You may need to adjust it should there be summer thunderstorms or if you notice a better time where the water sticks around. Water deeply: Before you overwater, it's important to understand what this means and how much deeply involves. Check the soil and see if water has permeated the top six inches of clay soil or eight to 12 inches if you have loamy soil. Make sure the water is not stagnating on the top as this could mean your soil is compacted and it may lead to plant rot. Think long, soaking rain rather than many several quick sprinkles. Water when plants are ready: Plants will tell you when they are thirsty. Leaves will wilt or droop. The leaves may also yellow, curl up, or drop off. That means they really could use some water. Water in the morning: By focusing your plant and lawn watering on this point in the day, it gives the plants and lawn a way to fill up on water they can use throughout the day. Water plants when they need it: Besides when they are thirsty, there are other times where a plant or lawn may most need water. This includes giving more water to baby seedlings and transplants to help them because their root systems are not yet developed and acclimated to the soil.  Another group of plants that need water [...]

Pugh’s Earthworks knows that proper Summer watering is critical for the health of Commercial Landscapes

Pugh's Earthworks In some parts of the US, this summer has brought more rain than normal and in other parts more drought than anticipated. Water is such a critical element for life and true for plants as well. However, water not applied in proper quantity or at the wrong time a day can often create more problems. Hiring the professional and certified commercial landscape technicians at Pugh's Earthworks will ensure that your commercial property receives the exact formula of water application to maximize grow and overall health. As the temperatures continue to soar, it's important to have a regular summer watering schedule for your lawn to ensure it can thrive and grow throughout the year. Here are some tips on how to water your lawn during the summer season: You don't need to water your lawn every day in the summer despite thinking it will help in the hot weather. What happens is that the lawn gets over-watered and starts to die. Get to know the soil properties of the area you live in. This tells you a lot about how to water your lawn in the summer and throughout the year. This is because water tends to penetrate soils differently. For example, it is more likely to penetrate sandy or loose soil than clay-based soil.  The water should penetrate six to eight inches below the ground surface. Check your overall irrigation system for your lawn to identify any places where water is not regularly reaching that portion of your lawn. Any dry spots will tell you where you need to make changes to your irrigation. Think about what type of grass you have in your lawn as this will also tell you more about how to water it. For example, Tall Fescue has a deep root system. This means it has the highest drought tolerance of all cool-season turf types. Then, Kentucky Bluegrass goes dormant during a drought. Warm-season grasses, which include Zoysia, St. Augustine, Bermuda, and Centipede, tend to thrive in warm conditions. They have a deep root system and require approximately 20% less water than cool-season lawn grasses. The age of your lawn is also an important consideration for determining irrigation frequency. While all lawns need consistent moisture, you need to proceed with caution on newly-planted lawns. Do not rely on rainfall. Instead, you'll need to provide supplemental irrigation during the first year of growth to ensure it develops that deep root system. Focus your watering times on early morning or late afternoon/evening when the sun is not scorching the grass or adding to the water evaporation. As a commercial landscape and maintenance company that is focused on helping local businesses enjoy healthy, beautiful outdoor spaces, we are here to help with your lawn care needs. Contact us, Pugh's Earthworks today and we'll keep your lawn looking lush and green throughout all seasons. Pugh's Earthworks Big Company Strength and Small Company Values! Your commercial property grass and plants need nutrition in the Spring and the Pugh’s Earthworks professionals know the correct fertilizer to apply

Pugh's Earthworks The certified landscape technicians at Pugh's Earthworks, are licensed and well versed in all types of fertilizer and chemical commercial lawn applications. It is Spring which is a critical time to fertilize your lawn and plants. That is because this is when growing season starts again. The fertilizer has the nutrition that all green things need to really start growing. In addition to the proper application of fertilizers, commercial lawns must have adequate water. Again the certified landscape technicians at Pugh's Earthworks will consult with each property owner on the correct level of watering to maximize the health of the lawn. Water promotes cell enlargement and aids in evaporative cooling. Lawns and plants also require sunlight and carbon dioxide for energy production as well as oxygen for respiration. Lawn growth also involves getting nutrients from the soil that are absorbed by roots. Sometimes, the soil does not have these nutrients so that's where fertilizer comes in to help out. In fact, one research article noted that there must be at least 18 elements for proper plant growth. And, if any are missing, it could limit plant or lawn growth. This includes nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. By applying fertilizer to the soil, the soil becomes more fertile. The result is that the plants and lawn that the soil feeds becomes healthier, resisting damage from insects and fungus. Commercial property owners will be able to tell if plants, trees, and lawns are not getting the right nutrition. That is because their leaves will be yellow or light green. They may even have dead spots on them. There will be fewer leaves. And, the ones that are there will be smaller than normal. There will also be poor plant structure and root growth. Look for fertilizers that incorporate organic enzymes and amino acids. These help plants and lawns deal with any seasonal stresses from heat or frosts as well as transplanting. Since more insects and diseases also turn up at this time, these ingredients in the fertilizer will help strengthen the roots and offer protection. Look for fertilizers for certain types of plants, shrubs, and lawns. It helps to use a customized fertilizer for the area you want to feed. If you are not sure, contact us at Pugh's Earthworks and we'll be glad to help with lawn fertilizing and yard fertilizing. A very good article addressing this was written by Dr. Melinda Knuth, “Future water availability could change the American landscape. ”Melinda Knuth, PhD Texas A&M    Drought perception The public tends to have a skewed perception of drought and Knuth’s research shows that people often perceive a drought when there actually isn’t one occurring. Consequently, the team found that attitudes toward water conservation between those who correctly perceive they are in a drought differs from those who correctly perceive they’re not in [...]

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers about Irrigation Installation Q: How will I benefit from an in-ground sprinkler system? A: Since hand watering is done on a random basis, and at irregular intervals, an automatic sprinkler system will actually, in most cases, use less water. It will also disperse the water at an even rate, and for a predetermined amount of time. This allows you to water sunny and shady areas for different periods of time, and to water when it is most efficient. One obvious benefit is the ability to continue a watering program while you are away on vacation, etc. Q: How long does a system take to put in? A: It would depend on the area that is trying to be covered. An average size lawn (@15,000 sq. ft.) can usually be done in one full day, depending on the situation. A large country lawn can take anywhere from two to four days. On average, we spend one to two days on a job. Q: What is a back flow device, and why do I need one on my sprinkler system? A: A back flow device is generally a brass assembly that will prevent any water from the sprinkler system from getting into the drinking water supply, and are required by all municipalities. There are many different types of these, and each individual municipality has differing requirements for the installation. Q: What type of maintenance does the system require? A: All systems need to be winterized at the end of the season. This is done by attaching an air hose to a fitting on the water line, and blowing all of the water out of the system. Most people that we install systems for simply turn it back on in the springtime themselves. We do offer the service of opening systems for the season. The quality of the products used initially, and of the overall installation, play an important part in the long [...]

Checking the condition of the lawn Summer Lawn Watering Most lawn experts and research indicates that turf grasses need an estimated 1 inch of water per week to stay healthy and green. Although occasionally if the summer heat is too intense you may have to let the lawn go into an almost dormant state. In order to have a strong lawn you need to encourage deep root growth. In addition we all need to be aware of water conservation. It is a precious resource to be used wisely. Below are some tips that experts recommend. When to water - Signs of footprints and a darker color in the lawn are typically signs of early drought stress. Water infrequently - When you water make sure the watering is deep down to the roots. This creates a deep root growth pattern and encourages less weed growth. Water early in the day - If you water in the heat of the day your water will evaporate. If you water at night it can create fungal growth and lawn damage. Spread the water evenly - Try to avoid flooding some spots while missing the water on others. Water conservation awareness -  Mowing the lawn higher, avoiding excess nitrogen fertilizer, limiting foot traffic, discontinuing pesticides and careful placement of the sprinklers so as not to waste water on the driveway or street are all things that can help to conserve water. Avoid over-watering - As the water is absorbed monitor your watering to ensure there are no areas of standing water afterwards. Monitor rainfall - Watch the weather forecasts. If rain is expected do not water the lawn. Reduce Lawn Watering When Cooler Weather Arrives

Pugh's Earthworks Commercial Landscape Maintenance Services For Tennessee Pugh's Earthworks provides commercial landscape design and maintenance services throughout Tennessee, including Memphis, Jackson, and Nashville plus we service residential and commercial lawns in Little Rock, Arkansas. Our monthly seasonal landscape care for lawns is done by a team of highly trained and service-focused professionals who love what they do. During all seasons of the year, our landscape professionals focus on expert lawn care, including irrigation and sprinklers, fertilizing, reseeding, aeration, and more. Lawn care can include additional services for your landscape, pest control, and ice and snow removal needs. During all parts of the year, water plays an important role in keeping your lawn looking green and lush. That means even when colder weather sets in. Even when grass goes dormant, the roots still require water in order to remain hydrated during the cold months. Otherwise, roots can dry up and even die. The grass might look fine above ground, but the lack of water could have weakened it enough to die when  the warmer weather returns or it gets hit by disease. Also, watering your lawn just before low temperatures hit can help protect it from frost damage. The water strengthens the grass, enabling it to fight any potential damage caused by cold weather. Also, water releases heat more slowly than plant tissues, which then helps the grass blades hold onto heat longer. What does change about watering your lawn is the amount of water you should use for your lawn during those cooler months. Already, here in Memphis, we are experiencing some pretty chilly weather conditions. That means our landscape teams are making changes to automatic sprinkler systems and irrigation controls. This is the time to move from twice a week watering to a schedule where you water just once a week. And, with rainy weather on the way, there may be times where Nature does the job for your sprinklers so you'll need to switch them off. Do you need help with your lawn during the winter? Give us a call and we'll be happy to provide you with a free lawn maintenance quote.
