Pugh's Team Pugh's Earthworks Team No matter what industry you are in, medical, legal, banking, education, landscaping etc., looking the part is important. The professionals at Pugh's Earthworks realize that doing a great job at landscape design and seasonal maintenance is critical to set us apart from the competition. However, we also realize that showing up on the job site in torn jeans or dirty t shirts is not acceptable. We are in the commercial landscaping business and our job sites are at numerous businesses that must present a professional image to their clients. The Pugh's Earthworks team wears appropriate landscaping attire that presents well and also proudly displays our name. Not just our employees look the part but we take pride in our trucks and our equipment. Mowers have sharpened blades, trucks are clean and trimming equipment is well maintained. An excerpt from the Landscaping Magazine also speaks to the importance of dressing for the part: Bill Smith, a branch manager at Grassmaster Plus in Massachusetts, acknowledges landscaping is a dirty job. They provide their employees six T-shirts on rotation, so they have a clean shirt to wear each day they work, while giving them the opportunity to wash the clothes on Sundays. In total, it costs them about $2,000 annually. “You open up your closet and you see your work stuff and the stuff you’re going to wear on the weekend. Why can’t we intersect the two things and be really proud of (your company)?” Joseph Stark, [...]

January Landscaping January is one of the coldest months of the year and landscaping is not always top of mind. However, there is much that can be done during this cold winter time to prepare for spring and a productive growing season. Pugh's Earthworks understands this and focuses on the things that help to keep them a top performing landscaping firm. This knowledge comes from being in the industry for over 25 years and the continual learning through landscape certification programs and trade publications. Some of the important landscaping actions to take in January are below: Tool Maintenance - Sharp blades on mowing equipment is key to a more beautiful and healthy lawn. The Pugh's Earthworks landscaping technicians work on the mowers to make sure blades are sharpened or replaced if needed. In addition, time is spent making sure all landscaping tools are cleaned and lubricated. Tools include not just mowers but also, pruners, loppers, leaf blowers and weed eaters. Dirt left on tools can eventually lead to spreading soil diseases to the landscape and also cause deterioration of the tools. Pruning - Not something that is always commonly considered is pruning shrubs and trees during the winter months. However, this is actually a good time as the plants and trees are in dormancy. This action makes the plants healthier plus it can be a time saver when Spring finally arrives. Also, for those that live in parts of the country that receive heavy snowfall, brushing the snow off of the branches prior to it freezing can protect the plants from breakage or permanent disfiguration of the shrub or tree. Fertilize - January is a good time to put down food for the lawn as well as herbicide for weed and disease prevention. This is also a good time to place fertilizer around the drip line of trees. They need fuel just like the grass and proper [...]

Job Contract Analysis As the old adage goes, you cannot try to be all things to all people. Pugh's Earthworks management realizes that their specialty is Commercial Landscape design, installation and maintenance. They focus on being the best they can be in the markets they serve and have the client testimonials to back up their expertise and commitment to excellence.  I started to think about what may be involved in complete and accurate analysis in contract review and found an interesting article in Lawn and Landscape Magazine that speaks well to that process. Pre-screen and qualify your prospects You must find ways to work smarter, not harder. This starts with implementing a solid, well-structured pre-screening and qualifying program. The program should be documented and trained so several people in your organization can do the screening and pre-qualifying of the prospects that call. Building the program has a number of facets to it: Pre-screening This is the first step where you make sure that the prospect’s project aligns with the work you do. The prospect may need a large tree removed from their property. You do not do arborist work, so you can let the prospect know that you do not offer this service. At that point you can end the call or refer the prospect to a company that you know does good work. Be careful when referring work to another contractor. The work they do reflects directly back to you. Referring to the [...]

Pugh's Earthworks offers Free consultations for Institutional Clients!     Considerations for Institutional Landscaping Unless you are a trained and certified landscape technician as are the professionals at Pugh's Earthworks, the considerations for Institutional landscaping are probably foreign to you. Doing some research it was revealing to see just how much planing and thought goes into such a massive job. Not only for the initial plan design to optimize the aesthetic view of the property but equally important is the ongoing maintenance required to maintain that beauty. Below are some of the key considerations for Institutional landscape design and maintenance: Entrance - We all know that first impressions are critical. The same holds true when someone walks up to an Office building for the first time.  Not only should the entrance be inviting for quests but it should also be a place the employees are proud of. The technicians at Pugh's Earthworks will know which plants and flowers will compliment the building and also which are native to the region. Enhanced Signage - Companies spend large marketing dollars to design signage they feel best represents the company and will attract prospective customers. Naturally the owners do not want landscapes that obstruct the view of the sign. Instead a well trained landscaper will add flowers and plants that compliment the signage and bring more attention to it. Outdoor Seating/Common Area - Everyone enjoys a nice place to take a break from work. Phone calls, emails, meetings and deadlines can weigh on you. Offices that have taken the extra step in creating an outdoor oasis for their employees will reap the benefits of [...]
