Fall is nearly officially here. However, you may have noticed in the last couple weeks that more leaves are on your commercial lawn and landscaped areas. There may be debris from the recent storms as well. Although the leaves will continue to fall over a prolonged period, it's important to stay on top of them and other debris like small branches and other organic matter. That's because if the leaves and debris are left to pile up, the organic matter can start to mold and cause problems for the lawn, including killing the grass and creating bald patches. There are many ways to keep your commercial lawn and landscape clean. First, you can use rakes to remove the leaves and natural debris on a weekly basis. Second, you can opt to use a leaf blower, which can speed the work of clearing it from your lawn. Once you have gathered all your leaves and debris, you can use a leaf shredder and collect the debris into lawn bags for disposal. Alternatively, you may also want to save all the leaves and debris and turn it into mulch or put it in a composting container. You'll need to continue this throughout September, October, and November until winter arrives. This can be a lot of work, especially when you are trying to run a business. That's why you can leave the work to our commercial lawn and landscaping maintenance team to get it done for you. That way, your landscape looks pristine and you can focus on your business and customers! Contact us now to learn about our monthly commercial services, including snow and ice treatment for the upcoming winter months.

Knowing when to fertilize during the late summer and early fall period can depend on a variety of factors. One of the most important factors is the type of grass you have on your lawn. It's also based on what type of weather conditions you have. experience. Fertilizing your lawn when it is not expecting it can be problems for your lawn. Based on years of experience, here are some tips on when and how to fertilize your lawn. Why you should fertilize in the late summer or early fall By late August and early September, your lawn really needs some help recovering from the heat and minimal water. That's why nitrogen-based fertilizer can really help the grass recover and promote new grass growth before the fall. Caring for cool-season grass and warm-season grass Warm and cool-season grasses need to be fertilized differently. For warm-season grasses, your lawn needs a more robust amount supplied during the late summer months. This works for lawns with Bermuda grass or St. Augustine grass. If you have cool-season grasses, including varieties like bluegrass or fescue, you need to postpone fertilizing until late fall around October or November. At this point, use a phosphorous-based fertilizer to help get it ready for winter. Tips for fertilizing your summer and fall lawns Before fertilizing, there are steps you need to take to make sure you optimize the results. First, don't fertilize if you are still in a drought. Make sure the lawn is fully watered or the fertilizer will burn the existing lawn. Don't forget to fertilize the edges of the lawn and focus on even distribution of the fertilizer across your lawn by moving slowly across it. Finally, don't over-fertilize because the grass will grow too quickly. If you need assistance, contact us today to let a professional handle all your commercial lawn maintenance needs. Trim Your Limbs For Healthier Trees
Pugh's Earthworks The Best Commercial Landscape Services in Memphis Healthy trees are ones that have their limbs trimmed on a regular basis. Plus, it makes the landscape look great and ensures a higher level of safety that limbs or branches won't fall unexpectedly. As a commercial landscape company, we have deep expertise and years of experience maintaining trees. Here are some tips to follow for trimming those limbs: General Tree Trimming A general rule of thumb is to trim or prune a tree during its dormant season. Be aware of the size of the branches that you need to remove. Only trim branches that have weak, V-shaped, and narrow angles. Be sure to keep the branches that have strong, U-shaped angles. Then, lateral branches should be between one-half and three-quarters the diameter of the stem where it attaches to the tee. Otherwise, these branches should be removed. Tree Pruning Tips Crown thinning involves thinning out the limbs located near the crown of the tree. When you work on this area of the tree, keep the lateral branches as evenly spaced as possible. You'll also need to remove the branches that cross or run against others. Crown raising is a way to provide clearance for pedestrians. When you do this pruning process, keep the live branches on at least two-thirds of the tree’s height. Crown reduction involves removing the whole branch. Tree Trimming Techniques Before trimming anything, identify the branch collar, which grows from the stem tissue at the bottom base of the branch. Also, look for the branch ridge, which is on the upper surface. Always cut outside the branch bark ridge and angle the cut down and away from the stem. This technique can also be used to remove dead branches and trim back living branches. Avoid Planting Trees and Shrubs in the Heat of Summer
Pugh's Earthworks is one of the largest landscape design, installation and maintenance firms in the Mid South area. Our clients include some of the premier office buildings, hotels, hospitals, churches and cemeteries in the cities we operate. In addition to the commercial customers we serve, we also provide landscape services for Home Owners Associations (HOAs), Condo Owners Associations (COA’s) and individual residential homeowners. Pugh's Earthworks The Best Landscape Services in Memphis There is no denying that summer has arrived. That heat and humidity say it all. For those of us that work out in that heat, we know how we feel: wilted and dehydrated (if we are not careful). Just that feeling alone tells you why you should avoid planting trees and shrubs in the heat of the summer. Imagine how they must feel and then on top of that trying to get acclimated to new soil and put roots down. It's not a formula for successful planting. Instead, you may want to forego any planting until the heat of the summer diminishes and wait until the fall to provide a better opportunity for the trees and shrubs to get settled in before the winter weather arrives. This is an ideal time to rethink your commercial landscape and explore more drought-resistant plants. You may also want to consider a drip system or other water-friendly measures. Our commercial landscape designers can also work with you on redesigning your landscape to offer something different. Or, we can suggest other ways to protect your landscape from the heat and light intensity of the sun. This includes inspecting your irrigation system, mulching, and re-setting your watering scheduling. Water Wisely During the Summer Months
Pugh's Earthworks The Best Landscape Services in Memphis For Summer During the summer months, the hot weather and intense sunlight are tough for summer plants and lawns to take. That's why we often refresh both with extra water. However, there is still a need to water wisely during these hot months to be careful with water and get the maximum impact from your watering without wasting any of this precious resource. Here are some tips on how to water wisely to use less water as well as give your plants and lawn just the right amount: Water weekly: Pick one day a week to water your lawn and plants, preferably a time in the morning or evening where the sun and heat won't evaporate it too quickly. You may need to adjust it should there be summer thunderstorms or if you notice a better time where the water sticks around. Water deeply: Before you overwater, it's important to understand what this means and how much deeply involves. Check the soil and see if water has permeated the top six inches of clay soil or eight to 12 inches if you have loamy soil. Make sure the water is not stagnating on the top as this could mean your soil is compacted and it may lead to plant rot. Think long, soaking rain rather than many several quick sprinkles. Water when plants are ready: Plants will tell you when they are thirsty. Leaves will wilt or droop. The leaves may also yellow, curl up, or drop off. That means they really could use some water. Water in the morning: By focusing your plant and lawn watering on this point in the day, it gives the plants and lawn a way to fill up on water they can use throughout the day. Water plants when they need it: Besides when they are thirsty, there are other times where a plant or lawn may most need water. This includes giving more water to baby seedlings and transplants to help them because their root systems are not yet developed and acclimated to the soil. Another group of plants that need water more is those found in vegetable gardens. This includes pods that are forming on beans, fruit that is forming on summer squash or zucchini, and tomatoes that are flowering. Help conserve water in the soil: Take steps to keep the water in place for the week by adding a layer of mulch. This also maintains a steady ground temperature and keeps it from heating up. Compost also improves the soil to hold water so add organic matter like leaves, grass, garden trimmings, and vegetable peelings. Contact [...]
5 Summer Lawn Tips
Pugh's Earthworks is one of the largest landscape design, installation and maintenance firms in the Mid South area. Our clients include some of the premier office buildings, hotels, hospitals, churches and cemeteries in the cities we operate. In addition to the commercial customers we serve, we also provide landscape services for Home Owners Associations (HOAs), Condo Owners Associations (COA’s) and individual residential homeowners. Pugh's Earthworks The Best Commercial Lawn Services in Memphis As summer arrives, it's time to start thinking about your plan for ensuring that lawn stays looking as lush as it has all spring. There are many things you can do to help your lawn is green and beautiful despite the summer heat and humidity. Here are five of our best summer lawn care tips: Feed your lawn with fertilizer during the early part of the summer. This gives your lawn a fighting chance to make it through heat, intense sun, and potential drought. The nutrients in the fertilizer help feed the grass blades, strengthening them to withstand what summer hits it with. Be wise with summer lawn watering. This means about one inch of water per week when it's very hot as well as deeper, yet less frequent, watering. Also, water early in the day to cut down on evaporation. Mow regularly but don't cut the grass too short. When your grass is taller, it can grow deeper roots and help shade the surrounding area while also becoming more grass tolerant. Therefore, mow it at two to three inches. Also, sharpen mower blades to cut more precisely. Consider changing your lawn to accommodate high-traffic areas. Do you have that part of the lawn where everyone seems to walk across because it's a short cut to your business? Consider installing stepping stones or another type of walkway here rather than having a lawn that shows signs of wear and tear. Know summer lawn bugs and issues so you can treat them immediately. This includes summer insect infestations from insects like chinch bugs, fire ants, fleas, and mosquitoes. Or, your lawn might experience fungal problems like powdery mildew and brown patch. There are also grubs that appear in the summer, so know how to treat these or get a lawn care professional to help you.
