While winter is starting to draw to a close, there are still freezing conditions that must addressed to ensure your lawn and landscape can get through the season and thrive in the coming spring season.

Mulching is one tactic that is important to do during the winter time. Mulching involves spreading organic materials over the top of the soil around plants. Made of shredded bark, manure, straw, and grass clippings, the mulch serves as a protective layer to maintain a regulated temperature while also helping the soil to retain moisture and discourage weed growth.

Severe cold areas require a heavier mulch layer to ward off those freezing temperatures.  Where snow appears, cold-weather mulching also protects perennial plants by creating insulation. Another benefit of spreading winter mulch is that it can insulate the roots and keep them cold and dormant.

For example, if trees are suddenly exposed to a warm spell in the winter and the roots aren’t protected by mulch, the tree can begin a false budding process that could damage or even kill the tree. Bulbs plants like tulips can also experience that process so it’s important to have a proper mulch coating on the ground around bulb plants, too.

When spring arrives and plants begin to bloom or sprout, the layer of mulching material that’s been added around them can help minimize the weeds. Also, any spring rains that are absorbed into the soil before you mulch for the summer months will be better retained because of the remaining coat of winter mulch.
