Hire Pugh’s Earthworks and ensure your valuable Trees are protected throughout the Winter

Pugh's Earthworks Winter Tree Care Winter Tree Care is an important component of any commercial landscaping year round program. Trees are a valuable asset and expensive to replace. Not only do trees provide shade during the hot temperatures of summer but they also add beauty to commercial properties. The Certified Commercial Landscape Technicians at Pugh's Earthworks are trained in all aspects of commercial landscaping which includes knowledge of tree care. It is some times common for people to get complacent when trees and grasses are dormant. The problem is that during these harsh cold temperatures, there is still a need for attention and care. Some of the steps the Pugh's Earthworks professionals will take to ensure their customers trees remain healthy are below: Winter Tree Care Deep Watering During the Winter months the tree roots are still growing deeper. They are on a continual journey search for water and nutrients to sustain the tree above the ground. However, if there is a shortage of water, the roots can become less able to continue their growth. At Pugh's Earthworks, our staff will continue to assess the soil conditions through the Winter. If it appears there is a shortage of natural moisture, they will take steps to start a deep watering program. Winter Tree Care Mulching It is common knowledge, for the most part, that mulching carries with it many healthy plant benefits. Therefore, properly applied mulch is something the Pugh's Earthworks team will focus on. Consequently, the trees of our commercial property owners will reap the benefit of retained moisture and countless nutrient. Tree Pruning Pugh's Earthworks is very talented at making commercial landscapes standout. One practice that is always top of mind is proper tree pruning. When trees are pruned during the summer growth months, there is danger in bug and fungus infestations. This is because the limbs are full of sap supporting the summer time upward growth of the tree. The best time to prune trees is during the dormant season like late Fall and Winter. There is far less chance of disease and tree damage during this time. Tree Protection Older more mature trees have developed a thick sturdy trunk. They are able to with stand harsh temperature and strong winds. However, younger trees that were recently planted are not as equipped to handle harsh condition. The professionals at Pugh's Earthworks know when a tree needs to have the extra protection provided by burlap trunk wrapping and more frequent deep watering.           Pugh's Earthworks is not only a company that prides itself with superior customer service. That is to say, service which in fact is backed by a satisfaction guarantee. Pugh’s Earthworks is the expert commercial landscaping company to call for advice on winterizing your irrigation system

Pugh's Earthworks Commercial Property owners spend thousands of dollars on irrigation systems. These are vital to keep the property lawns, trees, flower beds and shrubs from dying during the hot summer months or during periods of severe drought. The expert landscape technicians at Pugh's Earthworks are trained to help commercial property irrigation systems stay in superior working order. This includes winterizing so that pipes do not break causing property damage and expensive repairs. Winterizing irrigation systems is not as important obviously if the property is in say South Florida where temperatures rarely get to or below freezing. However, for a vast portion of the US, this is a necessary procedure. A good general rule is that if you feel or if the meteorologists in your region are forecasting sustained long periods of freezing temperatures, it is a good idea to call in the Pugh's Earthworks professionals for a consultation. Some good rules of thumb or guidelines to help you decide to winterize or not are: How intricate is your system? Like automobiles for example. Some are basic no frills models while others have all sorts of fancy electronics and gadgets. Irrigation systems can also be basic or very complicated with very expensive parts and accessories. Sometimes these parts are hard to find and usually quite expensive to replace. How large is your system? Depending on the property type, for example a retail shopping center or industrial park may be massive and have a huge irrigation system. Your certainly may not want to risk the expense of repairs to a large irrigation system. Conversely if your property is smaller then perhaps you need to weigh the risk of the winterization process time and cost. How old is your system? Older systems often have parts that are hard to come by or even obsolete. Not winterizing an older system may be a huge risk. At the end of the day, the decision to winterize your irrigation system or not is a personal one. When you consider the value of your project, it makes sense to hire a Pugh’s Earthworks Certified Landscape Technician. These skilled professionals can take you through all phases of your project. Those markets are Memphis, Tennessee which is headquarters plus offices in Nashville, Jackson TN, Southaven MS and Little Rock AR. Our firm provides monthly grounds maintenance services for commercial clients in these markets. Below are a few things that can be done to help to beautify your commercial landscape during the harsh winter months: Planting Evergreen Trees can enhance the overall appearance of your commercial landscape. In the dead of winter when there is little color to break up the mundane, Evergreens can add that spark of color that is pleasing to the eye. A couple of good choices for Evergreens are the Blue Dwarf Spruce which adds a blueish tone and the Gold Thread False Cypress which adds sparking yellows. If you are a lover of wildlife, attracting birds can be more of a challenge in the winter. However, by keeping your bird feeders full of food and using heated dog bowls for water, birds will be sure to stop by and add a sense of life to the dead of winter. Adding attractive lighting will help to amplify the beauty of your landscaping especially since there is less sunlight during the winter months. Many commercial businesses add holiday lighting to their building(s) as well. Repurposing existing decorations like flower pots, barrels, bird baths etc. will help as well. By planting annuals or using pieces of sculpture in these existing decorations it will add to their aesthetic value during the winter months. The experts at Pugh's Earthworks would be honored to earn your business as a permanent commercial landscape client. Pugh’s Earthworks is the commercial landscaping company to hire for your year round landscaping needs

Pugh's Earthworks Like many other processes, commercial landscaping is a year round task. Each season renders different needs for plants, trees and lawns. When you hire a professional commercial landscaping company with the skills offered by Pugh's Earthworks, you can rest assured that your commercial property will be kept in pristine condition year round. Now that fall has arrived and the weather is changing, it is time to take a more in-depth look at fall commercial lawn care services and what that involves. The fall commercial lawn care service includes seeding, dethatching, aerating, over-seeding, and fertilizing. Mowing -This is the time to start decreasing the height of your lawnmower. You will want to end up somewhere around an inch and a half high on your lawn height. The frequency of mowing is also determined by how fast the grass grows during this time. Take one-third of the blade or less. Also, it is better to mow in the evening so the sun is not beating down on it. Weeding - By this point, the weeds should be disappearing. There may be a few stragglers left to take care of before winter sets in and they completely go away. Trees and Shrubs -This is the time to also pay attention to trees and shrubs as well as the lawn, doing deep root fertilization. This provides your landscape with the essential nutrients it needs for the winter. Raking - It is very important to remove all leaves that have built up on your lawn. If you leave them, they will decompose and use up any soil moisture plus invite insects to your lawn. This will all cause damage, including dead spots on the lawn that will be a welcome home for weeds in the springtime. Aerating - Because lawns become compacted over time, this can reduce air pockets that are necessary pathways for nutrients and water to reach grass roots. That is why aeration becomes an annual event that is usually done in the fall. It loosens up the soil, returning those air pockets to the lawn. Over Seeding - Adding more seeds to your lawn can help fix dead spots and creating grass that is lush and beautiful for the upcoming spring season. Fall Fertilizing - A special fall fertilizer keeps the lawn healthy during the autumn months so that it has the nutrients it needs to get through the winter. Hire the professionals at Pugh's Earthworks and trust us to help you take care of your commercial lawn throughout the fall season. Contact us now to get started on our monthly commercial lawn maintenance services. Pugh’s Earthworks is the commercial landscaping firm to call for your year round pest control

Pugh's Earthworks Pest control is a year round project and the professionals at Pugh's Earthworks have got you covered. In the Fall pests are looking for a warm place to hibernate for the winter. While they are living in the walls of your structure, they build colonies and nests and ultimately bring destruction and disease. Proper treatment plans like those offered by Pugh's Earthworks will prevent these unwelcome guests from taking up their winter residence inside your commercial building. Then there is also the Spring season to worry about as well. Spring is the season for rebirth and renewal, and that includes animals and insects along with grass, plants, and flowers. While that is good overall, all those insects can wreak havoc on your commercial landscape. These pests include fleas and ticks, mosquitos, flies, ants, cockroaches, and termites. This is the season to start with your insect control strategies, which can help how much pest control work you have to do the rest of the year. Here are some tips for spring insect control: Store and dispose of food and waste properly, including any bins located around your commercial property. Keep these bins tightly closed and empty them daily. Control moisture and standing water around your commercial property. High humidity contributes to pest egg production. Fix any leaks and clear out gutters and downspouts. Also, trim tall grass and remove any wet or decaying wood. Inspect perimeter areas around your commercial property for areas that may ideal for insects to breed and live. Treat these areas first. Trim back trees and shrubs touching your commercial building as insects like to live there. If there are any fruit trees, clean these up because ants and other insects love the fruit. Keep all areas of your commercial property as clean as possible. Insects like debris and trash so remove all brush piles, excess leaves, and trash. Avoid mulch because insects love its warmth and moisture. The mulch should be used sparingly or not at all. Partner with Rosie's Pest Control, which as part of Pugh's Earthworks, has pest control services. This can help by regularly treating all lawn and landscape areas to limit any insects or pests. Contact us now to find out how we can reduce and even eliminate insects now so you don't have to deal with them throughout the year. By getting control of pests now, there will be less work to do the rest of the year. Pugh’s Earthworks Offers Pest Control Services Through Rosie’s Pest Control Pugh’s Earthworks  expanded its service offerings several years ago to include pest control for commercial and residential properties. Sometimes Fall is a great time to apply new Sod to your commercial lawn and the experts at Pugh’s Earthworks will know

Pugh's Earthworks Often the effects of a long summer can take a severe toll on lawns. In these instances, sod application may be the best solution to help restore the landscape. The professionals at Pugh's Earthworks know when sodding is the most advantageous corrective measure for commercial property lawns. Some of the clear and obvious benefits to sod is that it provides for an immediate lawn! Though there are arguments for sod application in the spring verses the fall, below are some things to consider when sodding appears to be the right solution. Sod can burn easily under the scorching Summer Sun which is near by if sod is laid in the Spring. By applying sod in the Fall the temperatures are cooler allowing the root system to develop over the Fall, Winter and Spring months. Sod will not require as much water to survive if applying in the Fall. The reason is because the grass is beginning the dormancy cycle and the roots will not require as much water. When it comes to the actual laying of the sod, it is always best to use the services of a professional landscaping company like Pugh's Earthworks. Our experts will know the proper amount of compost and fertilizer to mix with the soil. This is very important for the sod to take hold and get off to a great start. During the first few weeks, the Pugh's Earthworks certified technicians watch over the new sod. Proper amounts of water must be applied if the Fall season is dry and absent normal rain fall. Taking root is the ultimate goal for the new sod. The landscape technicians will be viewing sections of the sod to make sure new root growth is starting. Purchasing sod and having it installed is expensive. To ensure that your newly purchased sod has the best chance of success, hire the professionals at Pugh's Earthworks. We have the trained staff, the proper equipment and the burning desire to make sure our clients are satisfied.           Pugh’s Earthworks Credentials/Affiliations/Degrees, Certifications The Pugh’s Earthworks team has all the proper credentials, degrees and certifications necessary to deliver top quality landscape and lawn maintenance design, installation and maintenance services. Pugh’s Earthworks works year round to keep commercial landscapes looking their best

Pugh's Earthworks The temperatures are definitely starting to dip. I stepped out on the front porch early this morning and there was a stark change in the temperature from just a week ago. The professionals at Pugh's Earthworks know that landscaping processes do not stop as the growing season ends. Below is a Q&A excerpt from Pugh's Earthworks: How does lawn fertilizing affect clipping production? This question will be answered in two parts, beginning with the cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass) and then the warm-season grasses (Zoysia grass and bermudagrass). Cool-season grasses should be fertilized primarily in late Summer and Fall (September and October). Nutrients applied at this time encourage root growth and turf thickening. Fall applications also result in early spring green-up without causing excessive leafy top growth. Given proper fall fertilization, spring applications may not be required. High rates of nitrogen (more than 1 pound per 1,000 square feet) in the spring will stimulate unnecessary flushes of leaf growth and may predispose the lawn to greater summer damage. No more than one spring fertilization should occur. This can be in late March or early April with a weed-and-feed treatment for crabgrass or in May with a slow-release nitrogen source. Warm-season grasses should be fertilized when the grass begins its active growth in late spring and early summer (May-June). Again, for slow and even growth, use a fertilizer containing a slow-release nitrogen source. Warm-season grasses should not be fertilized in September and October. Everything you do in the fall can help your lawn make it through a harsh winter season, including giving it the food it needs to support root growth. Here are five tips for fertilizing your lawn as part of your lawn maintenance care during the fall months: Apply lawn fertilizer round two to three weeks before the ground is likely to freeze. You can look online for the frost date for your particular area and then plan accordingly. On average, that means applying fertilizer to your fall lawn around mid-October. Fertilize in the fall either in the morning or the early evening. Fall temperatures during the middle of the day can still be too warm, which could cause the fertilizer to burn the grass. Mow the lawn right before you plan to fertilize. When doing so, be sure to leave some of the grass clippings. This green material can help the roots. Do not fertilize before any scheduled rain. The rain will only cause the fertilizer to run off the lawn and work against your plan of fertilizing it. If it has recently rained, also wait until the grass blades appear dry and then you can apply the fertilizer. Continue mowing throughout the fall season but begin to drop the blade down the lowest setting as the fall season draws to a close. Aerate the soil as well to ensure that the fertilizer, water, and oxygen can reach the grass roots. This gets the essential nutrients where they need to be to further [...]

Adjust your landscape appearance for the season with the help of the experts at Pugh’s Earthworks

Pugh's Earthworks   Every season brings different weather conditions that impact your commercial landscape. That is why it makes sense to regularly adjust your commercial landscape to fit the season. This creates a year-round beautiful and welcoming look to your commercial landscape. The Pugh's Earthworks certified landscape technicians are educated on exactly what types of plants are acclimated to each of our four seasons. By rotating the plants that are used in commercial landscaping, properties are kept attractive. This strategy is part of the service provided by Pugh's Earthworks. Absent the use of a skilled company like Pugh's Earthworks, year-round commercial landscaping techniques which involves selecting trees and shrubs, can be overwhelming. Since spring is the next season coming up, let's start there. After a drab, cold winter, you will want to show some color in your commercial landscape. Look for the earliest-blooming shrubs, trees, and flowers to get ready to plant. You'll most likely start enjoying various colors by mid-spring. And, to carry on your staggered planting strategy, summer should consist of trees and shrubs that are heartier and can withstand the heat and humidity of the season. From there, fall offers a lot of opportunity for colorful foliage and deep colors across shrubs and trees. When winter arrives again, most of the plants and trees will go into hibernation, so be prepared to focus on colors like white, brown, and gray for a few months with the exception of the seasonal evergreen tree. Of course it is not just the plants and trees that are of concern. There is also your year-round commercial lawn care to consider. This area of your landscape should also have a strategy to keep it inviting throughout each season. With spring nearly here, it's time to sharpen those lawnmower blades and clean up all the debris. Keep an eye out for weeds and begin fertilizing. From there, each season will involve trimming, watering, and feeding until the lawn goes dormant again in winter. Below are some of the typical landscape plants and trees used at different times each year: Fall - In the fall, the key element that makes a beautiful and colorful landscape is the changing foliage. Two of the all time favorites for bright fall foliage are the Maple Tree and Sumac Shrub. Winter - This is probably the most challenging season. Plants that add color are Evergreen Trees and Shrubs. Another option for color is the Red Osier Dogwood. Spring - After the long gray Winter season, people are clamoring for colorful plants and blooms. There is a long list of those but for early color the Forsythia, Lilac and Mountain Laurel. Summer - Common are the Crepe Myrtle, Rose of Sharon and Hydrangea Shrubs. And, if you need expert and professional help making your commercial landscape fit with the season, then you should contact us today at Pugh's Earthworks to learn more about our commercial landscaping design and maintenance packages. Rose of Sharon   The Pugh's Earthworks [...]
