Pugh’s Earthworks Commercial Landscaping Water Conservation

Pugh's Earthworks has Big Company Strength and Small Company Values! Recently, I took a drive from Oklahoma to Georgia for a combination Business and Pleasure two week trip. As I drove, the hills, trees, lakes and rivers seemed to get more plentiful and beautiful. Culimanting by the time I got to Chattanoga TN, I was in a different world. Going through Littlerock AR, Memphis and Jackson TN, I paused for proud reflection on Pugh's Earthworks and the part they play in Commercial Landscaping Water Conservation. Then I thought about our fellow Americans out West where water supply reservoirs are at a cricitically low level and rationing is in place. Pugh's Earthworks is one of the Mid South’ s leading commercial landscape installation and maintenance companies. From its beginning, the company has continued its commitment to quality, integrity and superior service. The company provides the highest quality landscaping services and commercial grounds management for various commercial properties. Mark Pugh started the lawn business in 1992 in a $500 truck with his phone number on it. Just 21 years later Pugh’s Earthworks has developed markets including Jackson, Memphis and Nashville TN. Plus Littlerock AR and Southaven MS. Not only does Pugh's Earthworks focus on creating and maintaining amazing Commercial Property Landscapes for all customers, they also have a love for the environment. With this in mind, all chemical treatments for pesticides and fertizilzers are applied in compliance with industry safety standards. In addition, as landscapes are designed, things like soil errosion and water conservation are always top of mind. Pugh's is a member of the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP). Below is an article written by a member of that organization regarding water conservation efforts in CA. Earlier this year, the State Water Resources Control Board voted unanimously to implement a statewide ban on the watering of nonfunctional turf in the commercial, industrial and institutional sectors in California that runs for one year. The board also put regulations in place requiring local agencies to implement water use restrictions as water supplies may be up to 20 percent lower due to extreme drought. In a webinar hosted on June 6 by the California Landscape Contractors Association, the Irrigation Association, NALP and Maureen Erbeznik & Associates, Warren Gorowitz with Hunter Industries, Peter Estournes with Gardenworks Inc. and Maureen Erbeznik discussed the nature of the restrictions and the options available to landscape professionals. Erbeznik explains that nonfunctional turf refers to areas that are solely ornamental. If the turf is used for recreational purposes or community events, then it is considered functional. Exemptions to the ban include spaces that use non-potable water for irrigation or areas with trees. The ban does not apply to residential yards. Stay on Top of Local Regulations Local retail water agencies can expand regulations at their discretion to places like multi-family housing, golf courses, cemeteries and subsurface irrigation. With more than 400 water agencies in the state, the fluidity of restrictions and regulations will vary on each area’s water situation. [...]

Hire Pugh’s Earthworks to Maximize the Efficiency of Summer Watering

Pugh's Earthworks has Operations in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi Many parts of the country including the Mid-South, have had a very cool and wet May. However, it will not be long until the dry hot weather makes it critical to practice effective Summer Watering. Pugh's Earthworks is one of the largest commercial landscape design, installation and maintenance firms in the Mid-South area. Our clients include some of the premier office buildings, hotels, hospitals, churches and cemeteries in the cities we operate. In addition to the commercial customers we serve, we also provide landscape services for Homeowners Associations (HOAs), Condo Owners Associations (COA’s) and individual residential homeowners. A properly designed Commercial Landscape Sprinkler system, like the ones designed and installed by the Pugh's Earthworks Certified Landscape Technicians, will ensure that the lawn and plants on your property receive the exact amount of water during the summer. Protecting these plants is important as it is expensive to replace them. During the summer months, the hot weather and intense sunlight are tough for summer plants and lawns to take. That is why we often refresh both with extra water. However, there is still a need to water wisely during these hot months to be careful with water and get the maximum impact from your watering without wasting any of this precious resource. Below are some tips on how to water wisely to use less water as well as give your plants and lawn just the right amount: Water weekly: Pick one day a week to water your lawn and plants, preferably a time in the morning or evening where the sun and heat won't evaporate it too quickly. You may need to adjust it should there be summer thunderstorms or if you notice a better time where the water sticks around. Water deeply: Before you overwater, it's important to understand what this means and how much deeply involves. Check the soil and see if water has permeated the top six inches of clay soil or eight to 12 inches if you have loamy soil. Make sure the water is not stagnating on the top as this could mean your soil is compacted and it may lead to plant rot. Think long, soaking rain rather than many several quick sprinkles. Water when plants are ready: Plants will tell you when they are thirsty. Leaves will wilt or droop. The leaves may also yellow, curl up, or drop off. That means they really could use some water. Water in the morning: By focusing your plant and lawn watering on this point in the day, it gives the plants and lawn a way to fill up on water they can use throughout the day. Water plants when they need it: Besides when they are thirsty, there are other times where a plant or lawn may most need water. This includes giving more water to baby seedlings and transplants to help them because their root systems are not yet developed and acclimated to the soil.  Another group of plants that need water [...]

Pugh’s Earthworks is experienced with Summer Commercial Lawn Care

Pugh's Earthworks commits to strive in all we do for total customer satisfaction May has now arrived and already temperatures are expected to be in the nineties and above in some regions. Will not be long before the summer heat sets in for the long haul. Proper Summer Commercial Lawn Care is critical to keep lawns looking good and staying healthy. The certified and professional Landscape Technicians at Pugh's Earthworks, have the knowledge and tools to keep Commercial Property lawns in tip top shape during the hot summer. Being exposed to excessive heat not only takes its toll on us humans but it also is difficult to bear for nature. Meaning plants, flowers, and lawns. However, you can still enjoy a healthy Commercial Landscape even in the midst of extreme summer heat when you hire Pugh's Earthwork's. There are numerous actions that can be taken during the extreme heat of summer. Our team at Pugh's Earthworks is trained in all aspects of climate adjustments as it relates to Commercial Landscaping. Below are a few of the things we are mindful of. Length of the Lawn Often people like to mow the lawn very short. It looks nice and neat and gives the lawn that well-kept golf course look. However, when this happens and it is super-hot outside, your lawn suffers and turns brown. This is because the lawn is restricted on how much energy it can produce for growth. However, if you do not trim it too short, then the grass can develop stronger roots. And it is those stronger roots that support plants that can tolerate the stress that heat puts on it during the summer months. Use the One-Third Rule To determine the correct height to cut your grass, apply the “one-third” rule. This rule says never remove more than one-third of the grass height at one time. This keeps the lawn cooler because it removes less plant tissue. For example, if you normally cut your lawn at 2.5 inches, increase it to 3 inches during the hot summer months. Do not Over Water A big mistake so many people make, is to think the heat means grass needs more water. However, all that does is create another problem. The soil then tends to be constantly wet. This causes the grass roots to be deprived of oxygen. This can make them more susceptible to disease because diseases tend to thrive in wet conditions. Therefore, the drier the grass and soil, the less risk for a disease. Although you want to ensure hydration, you do not need to water daily to get that. Keep Mower Blades Sharp When grass is cut with a sharp mower blade, it will heal faster. Then, it is less susceptible to stress and disease that comes during the hot season. Also, the sharper mower blades will prevent a brown appearance. Use a Mulching Mower Rather than bagging up the lawn clippings, return them to the lawn by using a mulching mower. Clippings act as [...]

For example, chemicals are very often used for a variety of reasons. They can be used as pesticides to eliminate lawn pests that damage or kill lawns or shrubs. There are so many machines for the variety of Commercial Landscaping tasks. Ranging from Motor Vehicles like trucks, to mowers, aerators, chain saws, woodchippers, weed eaters, blowers and the list goes on. Each machine can be dangerous if not operated as per the instructions. Not only a danger to the technician but also to customers that may unexpectedly be in the vicinity of the job. The Pugh's Earthworks team is always aware of their surroundings and of the proper machine operating procedures. Still there are plenty of reports of landscapers that suffer injuries each year. A few years ago, management realized how inefficient being a paper-based office was. After researching options, the team elected to go paper-less. Below is a short story on how that all came about. " Michael Pugh, co-owner and CFO of Pugh's Earthworks based in Memphis, TN, says he first began thinking about transitioning to a paperless office back in 2005. Since that time the business has grown dramatically. Three additional branches have been opened. The volume of paper being generated daily—not to mention the inefficiencies tied to the handling of all that paper—soon spiraled out of control. Pugh reached his breaking point in 2010. "We were simply out of room at our main facility in Memphis," Pugh recalls. "We already had one entire office stuffed full of filing cabinets. Additionally, we had well over 100 three-ring binders with work orders from the past couple of years. We're talking about the type of paperwork you don't need to put your hands on every day, but still important enough that you don't want to shred it. I did not know what to do. I was looking at having to pay someone off site to store our paper. That was tough to swallow." Pugh happened upon a company called Cabinet NG at a QuickBooks user's conference. He learned about a product called CNG-SAFE, a complete document management and workflow software product. His curiosity over the concept of paperless was revitalized". It is small steps like these that add up to a Best-in-Class Commercial Landscaping company. In every facet of the business, the Pugh's Earthworks team maintains excellence by taking pride in their work and staying curious for ways to learn about improvements. Pugh’s Earthworks offers Best in Class Commercial Landscaping Serving The Greater Little Rock Arkansas Area Pugh's Earthworks has been officially in business since 1992. Pugh’s Earthworks can help Commercial Property Owners with the Important Spring Pest Control Treatment

Pugh's Earthworks Appreciates the Opportunity to Serve We have all heard the term "Spring Cleaning". Another very important part of preparing your Commercial Property for the new growing season is Spring Pest Control Treatment. Not only do plants, trees, flowers and grass start coming alive but pesky insects and other unwanted pests begin to come out of hibernation as well. The Pugh's Earthworks team is trained in all the proper chemicals and proper applications required to rid these pests from your Commercial Property. Rodents and insects can wreak havoc on your commercial landscape and buildings. These insect pests include fleas and ticks, mosquitos, flies, ants, cockroaches, and termites. When you hire the experts at Pugh's Earthworks you are making an investment in your valuable Commercial Property. Spring Pest Control Treatment This is the season to start with your insect control strategies, which can help how much pest control work you have to do the rest of the year. Here are some tips for spring insect control: Store and dispose of food and waste properly, including any bins located around your commercial property. Keep these bins tightly closed and empty them daily. Control moisture and standing water around your commercial property. High humidity contributes to pest egg production. Fix any leaks and clear out gutters and downspouts. Also, trim tall grass and remove any wet or decaying wood. Inspect perimeter areas around your commercial property for areas that may be ideal for insects to breed and live. Treat these areas first. Trim back trees and shrubs touching your commercial building as insects like to live there. If there are any fruit trees, clean these up because ants and other insects love the fruit. Keep all areas of your commercial property as clean as possible. Insects like debris and trash so remove all brush piles, excess leaves, and trash. Avoid mulch because insects love its warmth and moisture. The mulch should be used sparingly or not at all. Partner with Rosie’s Pest Control, which as part of Pugh’s Earthworks, has pest control services. This can help by regularly treating all lawn and landscape areas to limit any insects or pests. Contact us now to find out how we can reduce and even eliminate insects now, so you don’t have to deal with them throughout the year. By getting control of pests now, there will be less work to do the rest of the year.       Pugh’s Earthworks Spring Pest Control Treatment We expanded our service, several years ago, to include pest control for commercial and residential properties. A wide variety of common pests including mosquitos, flies, bedbugs, rodents, roaches, spiders and ants are treated with EPA approved, environmentally friendly products. Contact Pugh’s Earthworks for Commercial Property Pre-Emergent Treatment

Pugh's Earthworks Backs Every Job with a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee Now is the time of year when pre-emergent lawn treatments need to be applied. If you are a homeowner, you may be using a Commercial Lawn company to spray or spread chemicals. Owning a Commercial Property is the same when it comes to lawn care. Preventing weeds from germinating is the best investment an owner can make when it comes to ensuring a beautiful lawn later in the season. Pugh's Earthworks is the best company for Commercial Property Pre - Emergent Treatment. In addition to early season Pre-Emergent service, Pugh's Earthworks will keep your Commercial Property looking beautiful throughout the growing season. As a result of using our full services of year-round lawncare which includes, fertilizer application, mowing, irrigation, aeration, weed control and more, you will be proud of your Commercial Property. Customers and employees will enjoy the view as well. The magic of the Pre-Emergent process is the herbicides contained in the treatment. They act as a barrier by creating a vapor that eliminates weeds before they are allowed to germinate. It is critical that the service happens at the proper time. The professionals at Pugh's Earthworks know exactly what time is best. However, weeds that were present during the last growing season will not be eliminated by Pre-Emergent treatment. These will need to be professionally treated. In summary, the best approach to controlling weeds throughout your commercial landscaping is to stop them from even showing up. First, it's important to know about the weeds you are trying to control. There are perennial weeds that survive and reproduce even in adverse conditions like even through winter weather. Then, there are annual weeds that can’t survive underground but some emerge at times of the year when preemergent weed killers aren’t active. Next, it's good to have a weed control strategy as part of your landscape maintenance program that incorporates pre-emergent weed control. These products should be used before a plant germinates in early spring. For difficult annual weeds, you may need to do multiple applications, including at the start of the spring and then at timed intervals throughout the season. This is because pre-emergent weed killers don't destroy weeds and their seeds. What they do is stop the weeds and their seeds from growing. For the first treatment of pre-emergent, the middle of March is highly recommended just when the spring season is about to start. This tends to get the weeds that most commonly start to appear as the average soil temperatures go above 50 degrees. Major summer weeds include crabgrass or clover, so it's important to use a pre-emergent treatment to stop them. Often, it can seem time-consuming to handle all these weed control treatments at your commercial property. Plus, you might be worried about visitors coming into contact with the pre-emergent treatments for weeds. Above all, you can leave the weed control work to us by contacting us now to find out how we can add weed control [...]
