During the winter months, we often receive emergency calls for broken irrigation systems. This is because the pipes in the irrigation system have frozen and then burst. To stop this from happening, we have many tips for winterizing your irrigation system against the risk of freezes.
Drain sprinklers that are on a slope.
It’s important to ensure that all sprinkler pipes on a slope are completely drained. Use an air compressor to push out any remaining water.
Insulate the irrigation pipes.
Shut off the water supply for your irrigation system. Then, make sure it is wrapped with foam insulation tape and a plastic bag, which can keep the pipes from feeing. Any above-ground pipes must be insulated.
Have a main shutoff valve.
If you don’t have one of these valves, get one installed. Should any pipes blow and you have water shooting up everywhere, this valve can shut that down.
