Our monthly seasonal landscape care for residential commercial properties includes professional lawn care, planting and pruning, landscape design, water-conservation strategies, and more.

One of the areas we can assist you with is planting trees and shrubs, which enhance the look of your residential landscape or commercial landscape. We recommend that you consider planting trees and shrubs in the winter time. Here’s why.

First, plants store energy during the growing season to provide energy during the fall and winter for them to grow roots. Most of this root growth actually takes place during this “dormant” season.  Second, you don’t have to provide as much water when you plant them in the winter versus other seasons. Finally, much of the work you usually have to do with the true and shrub planting process is not necessary, including pruning.

What you will need to do is mulch because the trees and shrubs need this application to maintain a constant skill temperature that encourages root growth. Fertilizer is also important because it helps promote that critical root growth. For trees planted in a windy area, it’s important to stoke the trees to prevent undue stress on those new roots.

Evergreens are the only trees you should avoid planting in winter. Unlike deciduous trees and shrubs, evergreens keep their foliage in wintertime. These trees have a difficult time with establishing roots and preserving needles’ moisture levels during the winter months.  The only other issue would be if the ground is frozen as this would make any type of planting difficult to do.
